Seems that Valentine's Day has its roots in an ancient Pagan festival. According to History.com, Valentine's Day was named after its patron saint, St. Valentine. Some historians believe that Valentine's Day commemorates the death of St. Valentine on February 14, others believe that the holiday has its origins in a Pagan fertility festival celebrated on February 15 in ancient Rome.

Valentine's Day becomes a major commercial event in the U.S. after 1950. According to the National Retail Foundation, Americans spend over $20 billion on Valentine's Day gifts. Most of it is spent by men. Nearly 6 million couples get engaged on Valentine's Day.
