What happens when two pet care professionals give you completely different advice? And what if neither recommendation quite matches what youâre noticing about your own furbaby?
In this episode of Happy You. Happy Dog., Coco shares her experience navigating Manaâs sensitive digestion, working with a dog nutrition specialist, and discovering why even well-informed recommendations donât always tell the whole story about an individual pet.
From conflicting opinions about nutrition to building her own trusted village of veterinary and holistic wellness professionals, Coco explores how professional knowledge and our everyday observations can work together to help us make thoughtful, confident decisions.
She also returns to the heart of Fur Shuiâ˘âher approach to creating a happy, healthy life for both pets and their humans.
Because while weâre busy researching the best food, seeking expert advice, and trying to get everything right, thereâs something equally precious happening right in front of us.
The life weâre sharing with the ones we love.
And sometimes, that life looks like a little Japanese Maltipoo who knows exactly when sheâs having dinner with Mommy.
What This May Open Up for You:
A little reminder: You donât have to know everything or make every decision alone. Sometimes, caring with confidence means knowing who to ask, what to notice, and when to simply enjoy being together.

One expert says one thing. Another says the opposite. And suddenly, even the most committed pet parent is wondering, Am I doing the right thing for my furbaby?
In this episode of Happy You. Happy Dog., Coco shares how a change in her cat Hokuâs appetite reminded her that understanding our animals begins with knowing whatâs normal for THEM.
As a certified Animal Naturopath, Coco explores why more information doesnât always bring more clarityâand why even well-intentioned advice may not be right for every dog or cat.
Through Hokuâs story, she invites us to look beyond the latest recommendations, pay attention to our petsâ individual needs, and approach their well-being with curiosity, compassion, and appropriate veterinary support.
Coco also introduces Fur Shuiâ˘, her philosophy of bringing together holistic pet wellness, thoughtful living, and the beautiful relationship we share with our furry companionsâwith a simple question at its heart: What would a happier, healthier home feel like for BOTH of us?
Because caring for our furbabies isnât about getting everything perfect. Itâs about understanding the little beings we loveâwhile remembering that our own happiness matters, too.

A Note from the Happy You. Happy Dog. Team
This episode is a little different from our usual conversations.
For this episode, Coco has chosen to share a deeply personal part of her life as a mother. She remembers her late son, Koâhis humor, his love for cooking, his dreams, and the beautiful, complicated person he was.
She also speaks openly about the heartbreak of losing him, the things she wishes she could change, and what it has felt like to live with his absence.
There are moments of laughter, moments of tears, and moments of silence.
A gentle note to our listeners: This episode includes personal reflections on the death of an adult child, grief, and the painful circumstances surrounding loss. We understand that these subjects may be especially difficult for some listeners. Please feel free to skip this episode, or listen at another time, if that feels right for you.
This episode isnât intended to offer lessons or answers. Itâs simply a mother remembering her beloved son.
Thank you for holding a little space for Coco and Ko.
With love,
The Happy You. Happy Dog. Team

Do you ever wonder if you're a little too attached to your fur baby, or whether the things you do for them might look completely ridiculous to everyone else?
Coco is sharing some of her secrets in this playful and deeply personal episode, from analyzing Mana's poop and smelling her paws to cooking specialized meals, buying expensive snowsuits, planning her days around her, and giving the cats their very own bedroom.
But underneath the funny and sometimes wonderfully weird things Coco does for her fur babies is a bigger realization: she no longer feels the need to explain the relationship she has with them.
Whether Coco & Mana are taking slow, phone-free walks, sharing their daily routines, stopping for every interesting smell, or spending nearly every hour together, Coco has stopped worrying about whether their relationship looks normal from the outside.
Because perhaps the relationship we have with our furbabies doesnât need to make sense to anyone else. Maybe itâs about knowing the little being in front of usâpaying attention, listening, making mistakes, learning, and trusting ourselves enough to love them exactly as they are.
And somewhere in loving them that freely, maybe we give ourselves a little more freedom, too.

Who are you becoming because you love your pet?
Coco sits down with her son Joe, an actor, director, writer, and photojournalist in Los Angeles, for a heartfelt family conversation about his relationship with Aela, the independent black cat who came into his life during COVID.
When Joe adopted Aela, he imagined having a cuddly little cat who would happily spend hours sitting on his lap. Instead, he got Aela, a social, intelligent, playful, fiercely independent cat with her own ideas about affection, attention, and exactly how life should work.
Over six years together, Joe has learned to recognize Aela's unique ways of communicating and to look beyond behavior to consider what she might be needing. He's also learned to let go of his expectations and appreciate the relationship they actually have rather than trying to turn Aela into the cuddly lap cat he originally imagined.
Their relationship has changed Joe, too. Caring for another life means coming home when he'd rather stay out, planning around feeding times, thinking about Aela while traveling, and putting her needs ahead of his own convenience. Alongside living independently and his martial arts practice, Joe credits caring for Aela with strengthening his discipline, maturity, and sense of responsibility.
But as the conversation becomes more personal, Coco and Joe discover something deeper. Maybe love doesnât always change us into someone new. Sometimes it gives us room to become more fully who we already areâand allows the people who love us to see what may have been there all along.
Ultimately, Coco turns the question around. Instead of always asking how our animals are changing because of us, what might we discover if we notice who we are becoming because we love them?

Have you ever looked at your dog's behavior and wondered if it means you're doing something wrong?
Coco is joined on the couch by Emely, an animal lover and advocate, for an honest family conversation about life with Fender, her energetic English Springer Spaniel. Fender is strong, excitable, vocal, affectionate, incredibly smart, and, as Emely lovingly describes him, a big ball of energy.
She opens up about the moments when Fender's jumping, selective listening, love of the trash, and seemingly endless energy leave her frustrated and questioning herself as his owner. She also shares how comparing Fender to calmer, perfectly behaved dogs on social media can make those doubts even louder.
Together they explore a gentler way of looking at those difficult moments. Rather than treating a dog's behavior as proof that we're failing, what if we viewed it as information about what our individual animal may needâand what may be happening within the relationship we share with them?
They also discuss why dog training isn't one-size-fits-all, how Emely is learning to balance affection with boundaries, and how she has found herself developing greater patience and self-awareness through the experience of caring for Fender.
Because loving someone well doesn't mean never struggling. And a difficult moment in a relationship doesn't have to become a verdict about who we are as a person.
What This May Open Up for You:
About Emely:
Emely, Cocoâs youngest son Shoâs girlfriend, joins Coco on the couch for a heartfelt family conversation. Sheâs mommy to Fender, her boy pup full of energy and joy, and to Enzo, Mavis, and Ozzie, whom she rescued as stray kittens. Together, they share about the tenderness of caring deeply, the challenges of pet parenting, and what it feels like to be loved without needing to be perfect.

What happens when the little dog who has always been your baby decides someone else belongs to her family, too?
Coco welcomes her son Yu, his girlfriend Helen, and their tiny dog Chloe for a heartfelt family conversation about how a two-person relationship became a three-member pack. Helen shares what life was like when it was just her and Chloe, while Yu reflects on the relationship he developed with Chloe after caring for her alone during Helen's two-week trip to Italy.
Over time, Yu went from being another person Chloe enjoyed seeing to someone she trusts for play, food, comfort, and protection, eventually earning the title of official doggy dad. Helen and Yu share the different roles they've developed in Chloe's life and how caring for her together has strengthened their own trust and relationship.
But life with Chloe seems to invite something else, too: moments of slowing down and staying curious. From stopping to smell everything on walks to physically putting their phones away when she wants their attention, Chloe brings Yu and Helen back into the ordinary moments happening right in front of them.
This warm family conversation is a beautiful reminder that knowing someone deeply doesn't mean there is nothing left to discover. Sometimes a new relationship doesn't change who we areâit simply gives another part of us somewhere to emerge.

If your home could speak, what would it say your fur baby feels mostâpeace, love, joy, laughter, worry, or safety?
Coco explores the invisible emotional atmosphere our beloved companions experience every day. From comforting scents and familiar family traditions to moments of tension that Mana and her boys (cats) seemed to notice before she did, Coco reflects on how much of life with our animals happens beyond words.
Sometimes a look, a movement, or a quiet pause is enough to understand what the other needs.
This leads Coco to introduce Fur Shuiâ˘âa way of thinking about our homes not only through how they look or what fills them, but through how they feel. Instead of asking whether our homes look perfect, Fur Shui⢠invites us to notice the emotional weather we create together and consider what it might feel like for our animals to live inside it with us.
Because perhaps the greatest gift we can give our fur babies isn't a perfect home. It's a home that feels like love, a place where they feel safe enough to exhale.

What if you stopped apologizing for how deeply you love your pet?
Coco explores why so many of us soften, joke about, or explain away the extraordinary bond we share with our beloved animals. Through the story of cancelling a long-awaited trip to Greece to care for a tiny, sick Hoku and the everyday rhythms of love she shares with Mana, Coco reflects on the comfort, safety, belonging, and beautiful routines that can grow between two lives.
She also considers why our cultureâs admiration for independence can sometimes make deep attachment feel like something we need to defend. But being deeply attached to your pet does not have to mean losing yourself. Sometimes attachment is simply the quiet way two lives become beautifully woven together.
Drawing from something her therapist shared after the loss of her son, Coco reflects on the relationship between profound love and profound grief, and the permission we can give ourselves to stop measuring or minimizing either one.
This tender episode is an invitation to celebrate the love you share with your precious companion without explanation, embarrassment, or apology.

What if our animals were never meant to be our teachers at all?
Coco explores a gentler way of understanding the human-animal bond and the emotional connection we share with our pets. Through stories of Mana, Sora, Hoku, and Haru-chan, she reflects on the subtle ways our animals may respond to our moods, presence, routines, and emotional shifts, often before we say a word.
Along the way, Coco introduces Furotional Intelligenceâ˘, an awareness of the invisible emotional current that can shape both pet emotional wellness and the life we experience together. Rather than asking what our animals are here to teach us, she wonders what changes when we begin noticing what we are feeling, sharing, and experiencing side by side.
This tender reflection offers a different way to think about our relationship with animals, one that lets them simply be themselves while inviting us to notice the ordinary, extraordinary life unfolding between us.
