    مستوں  کی  بلا  جانے،  شام  آئے  سحر  جائے

    یہ  دیر  و  حرم  والے،  کیوں  راہ  میں  لڑتے  ہیں

    جب  ایک  ہی  منزل  تک  ہر  راہگزر  جائے

    ۳

    یہ  دل  کا  سفینہ  بھی،  پروردۂ  طوفاں  ہے

    ٹکرا  کے  تلاطم  سے،  ڈوبے  تو  اُبھر  جائے

    وہ  کون  سی  منزل  ہے،  وہ  کون  سا  جادہ  ہے

    انساں  ہو  جہاں  انساں  جس  سمت  بشر  جائے

    بےتابیِ  دل  سے  تھی  آوارگیِ  پیہم

    اب  کون  اِدھر  آئے  اب  کون  اُدھر  جائے

    تقدیر  چمک  اُٹّھے،  اُن  خاک  نشینوں  کی

    تو  جن  کو  محبت  سے  ٹُھکرا  کے  گزر  جائے

    رُت  گیت  کنول  بھنورا،  رس  روپ  کلی  خوشبو

    ہمراہ  چلیں  اُس  کے،  وہ  شوخ  جِدھر  جائے

    بیٹھے  جو  ترے  در  پر،  منہ  موڑ  کے  دنیا  سے

    وہ  اُٹھ  کے  ترے  در  سے،  جائے  تو  کِدھر  جائے

    آنسو  بھی  ہیں  شبنم  بھی،  کلیاں  بھی  ہیں  تارے  بھی

    سب  کچھ  ہے  نظاروں  تک  گر  تیری  نظر  جائے

    وہ  بات  جو  نشتر  سی  ہر  دل  میں  اُتر  جائے

    आलम हो यह मस्ती का, जब सज्दे में सर जाए
    मस्तों की बला जाने, शाम आए सहर जाए


    ये दैर ओ हरम वाले, क्यूं राह में लढते हैं
    जब एक ही मंज़िल तक हर राहगुज़र जाए


    ये दिल का सफ़ीना भी, परवर्दा-ए तूफ़ाँ है
    टकरा के तलातुम से, डूबे तो उभर जाए


    वो कौन सी मंज़िल है, वो कौन सा जादा है
    इन्सां हो जहाँ इन्सां जिस सिम्त बशर जाए


    बेताबी-ए दिल से थी आवारगी-ए पैहम
    अब कौन इधर आए अब कौन उधर जाए


    तक़्दीर चमक उठे, उन ख़ाक-नशीनों की
    तू जिन को मोहब्बत से ठुकरा के गुज़र जाए


    रुत गीत कंवल भँवरा, रस रूप कली ख़ुशबू
    हमराह चलें उस के, वो शूख़ जिधर जाए


    बैठे जो तेरे दर पर, मुँह मोढ के दुनिया से
    वो उठ के तेरे दर से, जाए तो किधर जाए


    आँसू भी हैं शबनम भी, कलियाँ भी हैं तारे भी
    सब कुछ है नज़ारों तक गर तेरी नज़र जाए

    The ecstatic state/trance should be such that when the head bows in prayer, the mad lovers are completely unaware of the passage of time. They don’t care whether it is evening or dawn, they transcend time.

    Why do these people of temple and mosque quarrel along the path, when all paths lead to the same destination.

    Takraa4 ke talaatum5 se, Duube to ubhar6 jaa’e    1.boat 2.nurtured 3.storm 4.clash, confront 5.storm 6.emerge
    This heart is like a boat nurtured by storms; confronting tempests if it is sunk, it emerges again. The symbolism is of a storm of love. Whoever immerses themselves completely in love, emerges triumphant. Said amiir Khusro …

    jo utra so Doob gaya, jo Dooba so paar

    ye ishq nahiN aasaaN itna hi samajh liije
    ek aag ka dariya hai aur Doob ke jaana hai

    voh kaun si manzil1 hai, voh kaun saa jaada2 hai
    insaaN ho jahaaN3 insaaN jis samt4 bashar5 jaa’e    1.destination 2.path 3.where 4.direction 5.human
    Which destination is it, where is the pathway in which humanity is universal; whatever direction one turns, there are human beings only i.e., they are not divided into religions or sects. The destination and the path that the poet is looking for is the path of love.

    betaabi1-e dil se thi aavaargi2-e paiham3
    ab kaun idhar aa’e ab kaun udhar jaa’e     1.restlessness 2.wandering, lost 3.repeated, constant
    Restlessness-betaabi is probably restlessness because of the temptations and illusions of the material world. One can easily get lost in the constant wandering-flitting from one attraction to the other. The poet/sufi yearns for contentment-why should one keep turning from here to there, he asks.

    taqdiir1 chamak uTThe, un Khaak-nashiinoN2 ki
    tu jin ko mohabbat se Thukraa3 ke guzar4 jaa’e     1.fate, destiny 2.dust-dwellers, downtrodden, rejected 3.kick, reject
    mohabbat se Thukraana- reject lovingly is a contradiction but can nevertheless be conceived as an act of love rather one of anger. Destiny shines on the humble khaak-nashiiN whom you reject lovingly. I am not sure I understand this. Is this addressed to the earthly beloved or the divine beloved. Is it a statement of humility that being lovingly rejected is enough. There is no expectation of success in love.

    voh uTh ke tere dar se, jaa’e to kidhar3 jaa’e    1.door 2.turning away from 3.where
    Those who sit at your door turning away from/renouncing the (material) world have no other place to go – where could they go from your threshold?

    aaNsu bhi haiN shabnam1 bhi, kaliyaaN bhi haiN taare bhi
    sab kuch hai nazaaroN2 tak gar teri nazar3 jaa’e     1.dew 2.withing sight 3.eyes, gaze, glance
    Here teri nazar could be the gaze of the poet himself. Thus, tears, dew, buds and stars are all before you to see if only you raise your eyes and gaze at them. This could be an implication that god created beauty is all around you. All you have to do is, look.

    jaaved says words (meanings) hidden behind the veil of ash’aar that descend into every heart like a knife … either painful, heart touching or heart warming truths.
