Today's message continues reviewing the continued persecution of the early church, be it internal opposition where leadership is distracted from their primary purpose of ministry and prayer without losing sight of the importance in taking care of the widows in their community. What persists is the opposition from the religious establishment and a consistent source of conflict that finally erupts in the form of Stephen's death.

This message helps us with the theme of the church today, where the Holy Spirit empowers us and Jesus is working very hard to protect his church as they face opposition. Jesus prospers the work of his church that brings more and more people to put their faith in him, in the face of persecution as people taught others about Jesus and the struggle those that heard between faith and unbelief.

In today's message Doug uses Ecclesiastes to encourage us to be occupied with gladness as we embark on a new year.

In this last message of the Advent season, we now complete our study regarding who Jesus was and why we celebrate his birth, life, death and resurrection. Jesus takes on our humanity so he can free us from death, help us in our suffering, and allow us to help others in the midst of their suffering.

All messages in the series so far have focused on Jesus crucifixion and while this one does also, it expands to his work in two ways as a human being - becoming a man, living on this earth and then his exaltation in his resurrection and ascension to sit on his throne and made an heir of all things.

Bill's message uses these verses from Philippians where Paul tells us that Jesus was made a servant, and described using the greek word doulos which translates to a slave with a subtle difference where Jesus made himself subservient to his Father's will.

This second message in our Advent season, we focus on what Jesus was made for and in this passage we see he was made poor. Paul shares that one of his responsibilities included collecting money to assist the church in Jerusalem (for unknown circumstances).
