It's no secret that this is a very Lynch-friendly podcast, so it would take one hell of a movie to hold its own against our first Lynchian stab (and Twin Peaks, no less!). Lo and behold, we think we found it in Lake Mungo, a legitimate cult horror flick that skewers true crime before it even exploded across the age of streaming.

So, yes, it's a good matchup, but at what cost? Both movies deal with the premature loss of a teenage Palmer, like a turkey in the corn. One is brimming with eccentricities, the other with clinical calculation. Damn. I didn't need that much garmonbozia!

Seems as appropriate a time as any to talk about Vertigo, the movie for obsessive film fans by an obsessive film director about a man suffering at the hands of his own obsession.

Tristan suggested we pair this classic up against Studio Ghibli's own When Marnie Was There, a film about a spacey protagonist drawn to a mysterious blonde with a knack for disappearing. Does it sound familiar? Well, maybe on the surface, but the road maps of feminine longing and masculine desire will take you to two very different destinations.

Buckle up, we're going to the peninsula. How phallic!

Now that One Battle has officially been canonized by the Academy as the Best Picture of 2025, we're ready to put the discourse to bed. What better matchup to do that with than the story of another father braving the big, blue, dangerous world to reunite with his progeny? Finding Nemo has been that story for over two decades. Has it been dethroned?

Of course, there's a little more happening under the surface between these two movies: the anthropomorphized natural world versus the very natural chaos of Paul Thomas Anderson's supposedly "civilized" society. What's inherent in the system? Are we leaving the world better than we found it, and are we preparing our kids to do the same? Well, we've gotta find them first...

Yes, we're talking about the famous Saving Private Ryan snub that decorated Harvey Weinstein in gold. That's all anyone seems to remember about John Madden's Shakespeare in Love. But how does the movie actually hold up?

And what about Chloe Zhao's take on a similar if vastly tonally different concept in Hamnet? Historical fiction never hurt so good, and it certainly explains why we're still talking about Shakespeare's tragedies centuries after their debut.
