If we asked you right now, "Who is your magistrate?" could you answer? Most people can't, and that's exactly why we made this episode. Magistrate Kenny Saltsman (District 2) joins Phil Taul and County Communications Officer Brian Walker to demystify the most misunderstood office in county government.

No robe, no courtroom: Kentucky magistrates are the elected members of the fiscal court, the county's legislative body. Eight districts, eight magistrates, plus the judge executive, one vote apiece. Kenny walks through what the court actually votes on (county roads and bridges, EMS, solid waste and recycling, animal control, county buildings, emergency management, the budget, and the county tax rate), how the annual budget goes from the judge's draft through line-by-line committee review to state oversight and adoption, how the eight districts are drawn, and what a normal week looks like in a job most residents can't describe.

Why Kenny, and why now? It's election season, and he is the only magistrate on the court running unopposed this November, so nobody can say we're playing favorites. This episode is about the office, not a race. His path is a story of perseverance: he lost twice to the longest-serving magistrate in Hardin County history, ran a third time in 2022, and won with his former opponent's endorsement.
