Hello, and welcome to Your Greek Word On A Sunday, a weekly, bite-size podcast for anyone curious on language, etymology and connections. I am your host, Emmanuela Lia and wherever you are in the world, if you want to entertain your brain for a few minutes, this is the podcast for you. Let's Go!
This is the story of one of the oldest devine royal couples in Greek mythology. It symbolises the bond between the east and the west. And I’m giving you the highlights here as this is a really long myth. So, Κάδμος (kadmos) and Αρμονία (armonia). Κάδμος (kadmos) is credited with bringing the origins of the Greek Alphabet to the Greeks from the east. He was the first ever king and founder of Thebes where half of the Greek ancient royal families sprung. Αρμονία (Armonia) was the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite (oops! Aphrodite was married to Hephaestus) Anyway. Their wedding was the first one where all the gods attended . Athena gifted her a golden dress, Demeter secured the crops for their land and Hephaestus, gave her an enchanted necklace that would bring misfortune to her descendants. Half of the Greek dramas are based on that lineage. As well as the fate of the Amazons where some stories say they were all Armonia’s daughters. However the couple was celebrated during their reign and before they died, the myth says, they turned into dragons and Zeus send them to the section of the underworld where all noble people went. The name Armonia comes from the word αρμος (armos) meaning Joint or bond. ΑΡΜΟΝΙΑ/HARMONY
