Sagewolf Interviews

Harry Joseph Ayala: Minerologist / Prospector / Wild Mustang Catcher / Hunter

Listen Later

If Harry wasn’t already married, I’d ask for his hand.
I mean, we are in Utah, so I could be wife #2.  I feel like Harry called me sweetheart enough times for us to be in a common law marriage, but that might not fly in court.  Regardless, he wants to take me hiking and camping and prospecting and I am so fucking down.

Interview highlights:
+ 92 yrs-old and sassy since day 1, 1929
+ Apache father, Aztec mother, Chumash grandmother, Cherokee wife
+ working a 1000-acre ranch at 7 yrs-old
+ how to catch wild mustangs (also works with men)
+ saving your siblings from a hard life
+ being hunted with a rifle by your dad
+ Malibu in 1942
+ Military: Guam, Korea, Seattle
+ saying no to Hollywood
+ maintaining personal freedom
+ hobbies that become opportunities
+ how to claim BLM land
+ gold, silver, and titanium
+ doing something because it gets into you
+ Harry schools me on monetizing this project
+ directions told by natural landmarks (a fading Sapien talent)
+ inborn entrepreneurial spirit
+ how Native Americans have been treated

A taste:
I’m not going to lay down and die, that’s for damn sure! Not as long as I can walk.”

“Freedom!  Number one: freedom…was my life hun.  I don’t want to be owned by nobody…not even my…people I used to work for or nothin’.  I want to be on my own.”

Favorite quote:
“Live your own life. Don’t try to live someone else’s life.”
