Harry's mermaid.
I've read this story 2 times now. I also have it in Steve Vernons, Sea Tales collection. I saw this one on amazon just sitting there with no reviews and thought, that's not right. It's such a great story that everyone should read. There's something about Steve's Sea Tales that jut strike a chord within me. Homespun goodness is what they are! I would recommend this story and author to anyone who loves good storytelling.
Too short
Harry is an old man, whose suffered tragedy throughout his life with the loss of his job and family. He's still haunted by the torment of his past. One day, he's on the dock, fishing with his friends when one of them hooks a mermaid. Harry's mesmerized by the creature and it may be just the thing to give him the peace he deserves.
The setting of the story was great, the way the author described the seaside town and the characters, made me feel like I was in the book. My main problem with the story is it was too short. I liked how the author went into detail about Harry's past, that made me sympathize with him. The ending was okay, yet I felt like something was missing and answers were needed.
Beautiful prose from a talented writer!
Steve Vernon is the king of the Simile! I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed this short story and devoured it in one sitting. The story and the characters grabbed my attention and held on like a mountain climber clings to a rock ledge...yes...I did that simile on purpose. The way Mr. Vernon phrases his prose is like nothing I've ever read before. At times I had to stop and re-read lines to admire how beautiful they were. Extremely descriptive and creative. My only complaint is that I wasn't done with the story even though it was over. I wanted more! Great read, highly recommended.
The descriptions were well done enough to make me feel like I was there fishing with them
The story works at the length it is. Any shorter and something important would have to be cut. Any longer and it would be a different story. The descriptions were well done enough to make me feel like I was there fishing with them.
Five Stars
