Harsha Walia on Border Imperialism

Listen Later

“Borders are intended to kill,” says migrant rights activist Harsha Walia. “They are intended to maintain the power relationships of race, class, caste, gender, and more.”
Today, Harsha Walia joins Thursday host Allen Ruff to talk about the history, politics, and ideology of borders and bordering through the lens of her latest book, Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism.
Harsha Walia is a community organizer and campaigner in migrant justice and anti-capitalist, feminist, and anti-imperialist movements, including No One Is Illegal and Women’s Memorial March Committee. She is the author of Undoing Border Imperialism (AK Press, 2013) and Border and Rule: Global Migration, Capitalism, and the Rise of Racist Nationalism (Haymarket Books, 2021).
