The island, which is about 1.5 km long and about 400 metres wide, is located at the western
end of the Long Island Sound, was formerly called 'Lesser Minneford Island' and forms the
easternmost part of the Bronx borough.
However, the island has only belonged to the city of New York since 1868, when it bought
the island from private hands.
The origin of the name 'Hart Island' has never been clarified, which is why various legends
exist about it.
Earlier, during the War of Secession, the island was used as a Union prisoner of war camp,
as well as a mental hospital and a hospital for tuberculosis patients, and also as a school for
young boys.
