Over the past few weeks we, as a church, have been in this series titled “The Songs of Christmas”. Throughout this series we have made it a point to dive into the history of various Christmas songs and we have made it an even bigger point to talk about their Biblical meaning.

A common theme within Christmas Carols is the theme of “wonder”. This theme of wonder is either referenced specifically or insinuated as Christmas carols proclaim the message of Christ’s arrival. For example…

Joy to the world has that beautiful line - “Wonders of His love.”

The song that we are focusing on today- Joy to the world. Is somewhat similar to the theme of silent night. It’s one of those Christmas songs that has kind of an ironic theme to it.

Joy to the world wasn’t originally intended to become a Christmas song, Consider that As one of the most joyous of all Christmas hymns, this carol omits references to shepherds, angelic choruses, and wise men. That’s because it was originally intended to describe the second coming of Jesus Christ.

The hymn has more to do with Christ’s second coming than His first, though because the two comings of Christ are historically and theologically connected, the sentiments expressed can apply to both events. The one that has already taken place sets the stage for the other that is yet to happen, an event which true believers eagerly await.

Every year these songs are on our lips, they get stuck in our heads. Does anyone realize what we’re singing? The Gospel saturated songs that surround the season?

Hark the Herold angels sing

Hark means listen, Herold means messengers, combine that and the song title could also go like this – “listen to the angelic messengers sing!”

This song has many themes included in it that we could study today. We could study the fact that this song points out the divinity of Jesus beautifully, or how the song proclaims the Gospel message of Jesus coming to save us. Every year we hear Christmas songs in the stores, on our favorite movies and tv series, we often play them over and over during the fulfillment of our holiday traditions, and we sing them in church.

Do we know the meaning behind some of the most famous Christmas songs in our culture? Do we understand the Biblical and theological meaning of the lyrics?

That’s what this sermon series is about. Studying just a few of the most popular Christmas songs and understanding their place in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

We have to ask ourselves the question when talking about gratitude, if I had a job moment in my life and everything was stripped away, what would I think of God? Would I pin all of my problems on Him or would I look to Him as the solution?

The goal today is to discuss Biblical truths that are deeper than things and materials, truths that are above circumstances. They are the biblical truths that sustain us to such a degree that when we have nothing we still are able to obtain joy, contentment and gratitude.
