Matthew 1:18-25 "Not what we expected"

1. Unexpected characters in the family tree; Jesus’ "Resume" (Mt 1:1-17)

*What people in your life, might you feel ashamed to be close to?

2. Unexpected news; (Mt. 1:18)

*When have you received life-altering news?

3. Unexpected character – true man of God (Mt. 1:19)

*How well do you respond to difficult news? Sudden change of plans? Where do you turn?

4. Do not fear (Mt 1:20)

*(Ps 56:3) “When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.”

5. Recalibrating your plans (Mt 1:20-25). Following the Lord is sometimes very difficult, but always the best way.

Micah 5:2-5

1. (v.2) Jesus is the Bread of Life (John 6:35, 47)

                      A. Bethlehem = "house of bread"

B. Bethlehem seemed small, insignificant, forgotten, but also where King David was from (1 Samuel 16)

C. David was small, seemingly insignificant, but chosen by God to be
 Israel's King (1 Sam 16:11-13)

2. (v.4) Jesus is our Good Shepherd (John 10:11)

A. We all are like sheep, needing a shepherd (Matt 9:36; Ezek 34)

B. The Lord is our Shepherd (Isa 40:11; Psalm 23)

C. Jesus is also our Passover Lamb (Exo 12; John 1:29; 1 Cor 5:7; Rev 5:6; Mk 14:12)

3. (v.2) Jesus is our King! 

4. (v.5) Jesus is our Peace (Isa 9:6; Eph 2:14)

A. He gives us peace with God (Rom 5:1; Micah 7:18-19)

B. He gives us peace in life (Isaiah 26:3; Luke 2:14; John 14:27)

#10 Response and Eternal Destiny.
We believe that God commands everyone everywhere to believe the gospel by turning to Him in repentance and receiving the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that God will raise the dead bodily and judge the world, assigning the unbeliever to condemnation and eternal conscious punishment and the believer to eternal blessedness and joy with the Lord in the new heaven and the new earth, to the praise of His glorious grace. Amen 

1. We are to believe the gospel of Jesus Christ! (1 Cor 15:3-4; Eph 2:8-9; Rom 6:23; Rom 10:9-10; Acts 17:30; John 1:12)

2. What happens after death? (1 Thes 4:13-18; Acts 24:15; Rev 20:13; 2 Cor 4:14; 2 Cor 5:10; Heb 9:27)

3. Eternity in hell (without Jesus) or in Heaven with Jesus. (Mt 25:30, 41; Rev 14:11; 20:10; 2 Thes 1:9; Mt 25:24, 46; Lk 23:40-43; Rev 21 & 22)

#9 Christ’s Return
We believe in the personal, bodily and glorious return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The coming of Christ,                      at a time known only to God, demands constant expectancy and, as our blessed hope,                                            motivates the believer to godly living, sacrificial service and energetic mission. 

1. Jesus will return as Lord and King! (Rev 19:11-21)
a. Personally and bodily (Acts 1:9-11; Mt 24:30; 1 Thes 4:16; Rev 1:7)
 

 b. In glory (Mt. 25:31; Lk 9:26; Col 3:4; Titus 2:13; 1 Pet 4:13)

2. When will Jesus return? (Mk 13:32; Mt 24:42-44; 2 Pet 3:10-14)
a. Signs leading up to His 2nd coming (Mk 13:10, 19-20, 22; Matt 24:29-30;                        2 Thes 2:1-10; Ezek 36:22-28; Rom 11:25-26)
 

 b. A time of "Tribulation" (Mt 24; Revelation, chapters 6-19)
 

 c. Millennial reign of Christ (Rev 20:1-10)

3. Live like Jesus is returning soon! (Titus 2:13; 2 Thes 1:6-8; 2 Tim 4:8; Heb 9:28;       1  Jn 3:2-3; Rev 22:20)

#8 Christian Living
We believe that God's justifying grace must not be separated from His sanctifying power and purpose. God commands us to love Him supremely and others sacrificially, and to live out our faith with care for one another, compassion toward the poor and justice for the oppressed.  With God’s Word, the Spirit’s power, and fervent prayer in Christ’s name, we are to combat the spiritual forces of evil.  In obedience to Christ’s commission, we are to make disciples among all people, always bearing witness to the gospel in word and deed. 

1. Saved by God's grace to live a transformed life. (Eph 2:8-9; Heb 10:14; Rom 6:11-14; 1 Thes 5:23)

 

2. Love God, love others, like Jesus (Matt 22:37-40; 1 John 4:8, 19-20; John 13:34-35; Isa 1:17;    Micah 6:8; Mt 25:40)

 

3. Fighting our true enemy (Satan) (2 Cor 10:3-5; Eph 6:10-18; John 10:10; Col 2:10-15; James 4:7-8)

 

4. We are called as transformed witnesses of Christ to make disciples. (Matt 28:18-20; Acts 1:8;     2 Pet 3:9 James 2:26)

#5 The Work of Christ.

“We believe that Jesus Christ, as our representative and substitute, shed His blood on the cross as the perfect, all-sufficient sacrifice for our sins. His atoning death and victorious resurrection constitute the only ground for salvation.”

1. Jesus represents all humans and is our substitute. (Mark 10:45; Heb 2:16-17; Heb 7:27; 1 Pet 2:24; Heb 4:15; Heb 9:22)

 2. Jesus' sacrifice was complete. (Lev 17:11; Heb 2:17; John 1:29; Gal 3:13; 1 John 3:5)

 
 3. Jesus paid it all. There's no other way to be rescued from our sin's consequences. (2 Cor 5:21; 1 John 2:2; Rom 5:9; Eph 2:4-5; Col 1:13; Rom 5:10-11; Col 2:13-15; Heb 2:14-15; Eph 1:13-14; Rom 5:6-8; 1 Cor 15:21-22; 1 Cor 15:57; Acts 16:31)

#7 The Church.

“We believe that the true church comprises all who have been justified by God's grace through faith alone in Christ alone. They are united by the Holy Spirit in the body of Christ, of which He is the Head. The true church is manifest in local churches, whose membership should be composed only of believers. The Lord Jesus mandated two ordinances, baptism and the Lord’s Supper, which visibly and tangibly express the gospel. Though they are not the means of salvation, when celebrated by the church in genuine faith, these ordinances confirm and nourish the believer. 

What is the Church? (Matt 16:18; Rom 10:9; Eph 2:8-9; Eph 4:12-13; Heb 10:25)

How is the local church structured? (Acts 14:23; 1 Tim 3:1-13; 5:1-16; Acts 17:11; 1 Cor 12:12-13; 2 Cor 5:20)

Why are the ordinances of baptism and Lord's Supper (Communion) significant? (Rom 6:3-4; Gal 3:27; Mt 28:19-20; Acts 8:36-38; 1 Cor 11:23-29)

How has the local church been a blessing to you? How have you blessed others through the local church?

Jesus Christ.  We believe that Jesus Christ (Matt. 1:21; 16:18) is God incarnate (Jn. 1:14, 18; 1 Jn. 4:2), fully God (Isa. 9:6; Jer. 23:6; Jn. 1:1; 20:28; Rom. 9:5; Col. 2:9) and fully man (Matt. 4:2; Lk. 2:40, 52; Jn. 11:35; Heb. 5:7-8; 1 Jn. 1:1-3), one Person in two natures (Jn. 3:13; 10:30; 17:5). Jesus—Israel's promised Messiah (Gen. 3:14-20; 12:1-3; 49:8-12; 2 Sam. 7:11b-16; Matt. 1:1, 17; Lk. 4:16-22; 24:25-27; Jn. 1:41; 4:25-26; Acts 2:36; 13:23,32; Rom. 1:2-3; 2 Tim. 2:8,9)—was conceived through the Holy Spirit (Matt. 1:18; Lk. 1:34,35) and born of the virgin Mary (Isa. 7:14; Matt. 1:20; Lk. 1:34,35). He lived a sinless life (Rom. 5:19; Gal. 4:4,5; Matt. 3:15; Phil. 2:7,8; Heb. 4:15), was crucified under Pontius Pilate (Dt. 21:23; Ps. 16:10; Matt. 27:26; Mk. 15:15; Lk. 23:16; Jn. 19:16; Acts 2:27, 37), arose bodily from the dead (Matt. 28:1-10; Mk. 16:1-8; Lk. 24:39; Rom. 4:25; 1 Cor. 15:20, 44-45; Col. 1:18; Rev. 1:5), ascended into heaven (Lk. 24:51; Acts 1:6-11; Eph. 1:20; 4:8-10; 1 Tim. 3:16) and sits at the right hand of God the Father (Eph. 1:20; Col. 3:1; Heb. 1:3; 8:1; 10:12; 1 Pet. 3:22) as our High Priest (Heb. 2:17; 3:1; 4:14; 6:20; 8:1) and Advocate (Rom. 8: 34; Heb. 7:25; 9:24; 1 Jn. 2:1).
