High Point, N.C. native Dave Phillips and North Carolina writer Mary Bogest discuss Phillips' new biography, "Come On America," a fascinating look at his contributions to the furniture industry, state and country. HAT editor Susan Dickenson talks with Phillips about “Chapter 11: Market Square,” and what inspired him, in the late 1970s to develop the Tomlinson furniture factory into High Point showroom property Market Square, his first exhibitors (Kittinger and Century Furniture), and how it led to the market's first "temporaries," the building of Market Square Tower, and the launch of the International Textiles Association and Showtime. Among his many accomplishments, this alumnus of Choate and UNC-Chapel Hill has served as North Carolina's Secretary of Commerce, chairman of the World Special Olympics, served as Ambassador to Estonia, and maintains close friendships with key figures in American politics - on both sides of the aisle. High Point University president Nido Qubein, in the foreward to Bogest's book, calls Phillips "an extraordinary catalyst."
