Hauntingly Beautiful

This week, on the last In Between Episode, we summarize the most notable films in the history of Black Horror. We discuss the how depictions of Black individuals in horror films has reflected discriminatory views, has attempted to change views, and has set standards for filmmakers throughout time. This episode serves as a reminder to be seek your own implicit biases and be alert for biases in our own communities that need to be challenged. Appropriate representations of BIPOC matter.

What better way to end Hauntingly Beautiful then with my good friend, and iconic underground filmmaker, Fred Vogel of Toetag Pictures! Fred has been pushing the boundaries for over 20 years in the industry with extreme horror films, like the August Underground Trilogy, but he has since taken his craft in a slightly different direction with his incredible latest effort The Final Interview which we talk in length about! This is the final interview for HB, time to put a toetag on it.

Recently I participated in a peaceful protest for the Black Lives Matter movement here in Indianapolis and it truly changed my life! So much could be said about the utter disgust I, and so many others, have for the unnecessary killings of our friends in the black community. The bullshit needs to stop, the time for change is now. Rest in power to our fallen friends.

With so much content to consume nowadays how is one supposed to know what to consume?? This week's guest, Editor-in-Chief, Jonathan James and his team over at DailyDead.com work tirelessly to help curve the insatiable hunger for the latest, and greatest, coming out for genre fans, you guessed it, daily! We talk how diverse the horror community is, how Jonathan and Co curate Daily Dead, and Jonathan's visit to the set of Doctor Sleep. The dead walk again for HB38!

We've covered plenty of Erie, PA lore on the show, now we switch gears to the Midwest in a town called Gary, Indiana. For episode 37 of TIB I get more insight into the alleged hauntings of the "Demon House." Paranormal investigator Zak Bagans, of Ghost Adventures, bought the house and conducted an extensive investigation of it for his documentary "Demon House" which led to some very interesting findings! This is our podcast adventure.

Horror author, and this week's guest, Terrence Main is not only one of the best dudes you'll ever meet, he's also one of the most supportive. Having a trilogy of independent novels, Terrence has since turned his genre attentions towards bringing the independent horror community together as part of the driving force behind the Grossfest convention held in Washington, PA. It's gonna get sick nasty for HB37 killers!

"Life's swinging hard, but I'm swinging harder" isn't just a killer The Ghost Inside lyric it's literally what this band has come to embody. TGI have always been a metal band with empowering lyrics backed by beatdown riffs, but over the last couple of years the band has been on the opposite spectrum of the beatdown. After a horrific bus crash in late 2015, almost 5 years later, the TGI boys are back and better than ever. Triumph over tragedy in Episode 36 of The In Between!

Vendors, celebrities, horror films, and a beautiful venue. The long running Eerie Horror Film Festival had everything a genre fan could want! I have a ton of love of this particular film festival and for HB36 I got the chance to talk with one of the showrunners of the fest, John Walkiewicz! We get into the details of what it's like behind-the-scenes, or BTS as the kids say, of curating a film festival! There is no escaping the Silver Scream this week killers!

Dracula, Nosferatu, Vlad the Impaler, and the most horrifying of them all, the entire cast of the Twilight series. Clearly all lore that you're familiar with, but what about the vampire that resides inside an unmarked mausoleum inside the Erie Cemetery? In episode 35 of The In Between we unearth the tale behind the Vampire's Crypt, one of my favorite Eerie folklore. Holy water won't save you from this one killers!

Most people have dreams of becoming famous writers, actors, filmmakers, etc, but not this week's guest Andrew Simmons. Andrew wanted to write the most over the top horror novel he could think of just for the hell of it. He did just that and it's one of the wildest novels you'll ever read! It's all in the family for HB35 as we dive into how his book "Shadows" came to fruition and how he continues to keep the roots of horror running deep!
