MY INSPIRATION FOR THIS STORY

I enjoy experimenting with different formats, and with Letters To Laurence I wanted to try telling a supernatural story through letters. I loved the idea of messages from beyond the grave appearing in a form that connects them to the person who discovers them – but how could such a thing happen? Finding the answer led me to write this story.

Few sounds are as unsettling as a knock at the door when you know no one should be there. In British and Irish folklore, three unexplained knocks have long been tied to omens, warnings, and unwelcome visitors from beyond the veil. Having sat in many circles hosted by the celebrated medium Mrs. Morrel, he has come to regard her as one of the best. On a cold December night, he takes his place in her circle expecting little more than the usual performance. But what unfolds before him tests his disbelief – and his nerve – to the very limit…

First published in 1912, Mrs. Morrel’s Last Séance comes from the heyday of Edwardian spiritualism, when séances and mediumship fascinated many people. In this story, Edgar Jepson slowly builds the tension as what begins as a familiar evening of tricks, trances and strange phenomena turns into something far more unsettling – and far harder to explain.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Edgar Jepson (1863–1938) was an English writer who moved easily between detective fiction, fantasy and supernatural tales, and adventure stories. Though better known in his lifetime for his mainstream fiction, Jepson also produced a handful of unsettling ghost and séance stories reflecting the era’s fascination with spiritualism and the occult. His granddaughter is author Fay Weldon, best known as the writer of The Life And Loves Of A She-Devil.

Séances are still with us – and still draw the curious, the daring, and perhaps the foolhardy. After finishing a late shift at the café, Jake boards the last bus home through the dark London streets. When a dishevelled stranger takes the seat beside him and insists they know each other, Jake is disturbed by the man’s strange intensity and simmering anger.

At first, Jake dismisses the encounter as unsettling but meaningless. Then the man appears again…

MY INSPIRATION FOR THIS STORY

I live in London and have always loved the old red buses so closely associated with the city. I sometimes visit Clapham, and I’ve long been intrigued by the phrase “the man on the Clapham omnibus” – an old expression once used in BBC voiceovers and legal discussions to mean the ordinary man in the street.

Originally, I imagined the story involving a ghost from that earlier era, perhaps the 1930s. But as someone who regularly rides London buses and watches pedestrians trying to navigate the busy modern streets and cycle lanes – of which more in due course – I decided a present-day spectre might be even more disturbing.

A female researcher spends the night alone in a supposedly haunted house – and finds herself confronted by something entirely unexpected. In this eerie and intimate ghost story, the experience that follows challenges everything she believes about the supernatural.

Algernon Blackwood (1869–1951) was one of the mostinfluential writers of ghost stories, known for tales that create a quiet, lingering sense of unease rather than relying on shock. His work suggests that the familiar world may conceal other forces operating just beyond our awareness.

Blackwood had a lifelong interest in the occult and mysticalexperiences and spent much of his life exploring psychic phenomena and the possibility of hidden dimensions of reality. He was also an avid ghost-hunter and, two months before his death, remarked that his stories were “more or lessautobiographical”.

First published in 1907, it’s thought that The Woman’sGhost Story may draw on these experiences, particularly his explorations of ‘haunted’ locations in London.

Following her mother’s death, Amelia is left to clear the house she grew up in. Room by room, she sorts through a lifetime of belongings – until she reaches the ornate mirror her mother spent hours before. Maybe she’s now old enough to understand why…

I got the idea for this story after spotting a battered old mirror tucked into the corner of a museum. Its dark wooden frame was wound with vine leaves and apples, each marked with indentations that made the fruit look uncannily like leering faces. The glass itself was tarnished, brown-spotted with age and for a moment, I had the uneasy sense it was reflecting something other than the displays behind me. I moved away quickly – but that mirror stayed with me long afterwards. I only wish I’d taken a photograph.
