  • Have you met Meredith Garritsen from Hervana Collective?

In this weeks episode we feature Meredith Garritsen, the founder of Hervana Collective.

After a rewarding 10-year career in renewable energy, she was ready to embark on her own venture. She wanted to create something that aligned with her values and interests and served to fill a gap that she had experienced. She founded Hervana Coworking Collective, the only women focused coworking community in Vancouver in 2017. They opened their physical location in July of 2018, and in March 2020 they dropped the coworking so we could stay home and stay safe and moved 100% online.

Her mission is to provide a platform for women to thrive, to build and grow their business, to advance their careers and hone their leadership skills, or simply to find an encouraging and uplifting community. No longer limited to one physical location, Hervana Collective is expanding through Canada and beyond.

  • Have you met Kristine Sostar McLellan from One Tough Mother?

In this weeks episode we feature Kristine Sostar McLellan, the Founder of One Tough Mother.

Kristine is an accidental entrepreneur. With a 10+ year career in Corporate Communications, she started One Tough Mother the year after her first child was born in 2017.

After experiencing the incredible shock (does anyone realize how frequently they'll be calling their Mom to bring giant pads and granny panties?), and emotional ups and downs of entering new motherhood, she knew she never wanted another Mama to go through it unprepared.

It started as a simple idea she was barely able to say out loud in her parents' backyard, What if I provided Moms with the information and resources they need in one, simple product?

But she set to work surveying hundreds of Moms, trying to figure out exactly what they they loved, used most and wished they had had. It became clear that, as much as they needed certain items, they needed information and support, too.

So One Tough Mother, and the Postpartum Survival Kit, was born. Whether for a first, second or fourth time Mom, the kit was filled with all the items new Moms need — and also came with an eBook and online community of honesty and support.

Today One Tough Mother is a Vancouver-based, Mom-owned business committed to helping Mamas thrive. Now officially Mom-owned — plural! —  as her childhood friend and doula (she attended both of Kristine's home births!), Allison Farrance, has officially come on as a co-owner. In addition to the Postpartum Survival Kit, they recently launched their own proprietary line of clean and vegan postpartum products: Thrive Mama... Because helping Mamas thrive is the entire reason they do what they do.

  • Have you met Ms. Danielle Kates-van den Hoek?

In this week's episode, we feature Ontario High School Teacher, Ms. Danielle Kates-van den Hoek.

Danielle is an Ontario Certified Teacher at a high school in the Greater Toronto Area.

Danielle was known by her own teachers from an early age for being a strong student, particularly in the subject of English. Inspired by one of her own high school English teachers, she obtained an Honours Bachelor of Arts in English from Wilfrid Laurier University in 2010. Still intent on becoming a teacher herself, she added a Bachelor of Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto to her resume.

Danielle was hired on as a supply teacher by two school boards in 2014 and 2015. After many days of supply teaching, five long-term contract assignments, countless interviews, and nearly a decade of working as a server in a restaurant to help pay the bills in the interim, she acquired a permanent position within the English Department at her current school in the summer of 2018.

  • Have you met Katherine Leroux from Future Female Magazine?

In this week's episode, we feature Founder of Future Female Magazine, Katherine Leroux.

Being diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome at the age of 16, it was only until she was in her late twenties and trying to conceive when she realized how serious her condition was. With a lack of Canadian resources for women dealing with PCOS, she created an Instagram profile to meet other women facing the same condition.

After going through fertility treatments for two years, and meeting other women dealing with infertility - she realized the commonality for how women feel alone in their struggles and are hesitant to share. It wasn't only about Kat's PCOS anymore, this was a much wider problem and that is how Future Female Magazine was born.

Her goal was to help create a platform for women to share their struggles, doubts and raw stories on topics such as Mental Illness, Cancer and Physical Disabilities. Future Female magazine is a self-care forum that is carried on by a theme chosen by Kat and Managing Editor Sara for each bi-annual issue with the hopes that we can gather our writers to share useful resources and information that can help you along in your journey!

  • Have you met Shannon Frame from The Collective Alchemy?

In this week's episode, we speak with Shannon Frame, the Founder of The Collective Alchemy.

Shannon is a breathwork facilitator in Whistler, BC.  It was Shannon's interest in meditation as a way to slow down, that led her towards the path of breathwork.  She fell in love with breathwork as a way to relieve anxiety and stress by calming the nervous system, and as a way to connect deeply with her soul.  As someone who loves connecting people, her goal is to build a community through her breathwork sessions where others can experience the same limitless possibilities of healing and awakening, simply by breathing.  She believes that breathwork allows us to open up our mind, body and soul, so we can go a little deeper, release what we no longer need, and start truly living the life we all deserve.  The transformative nature of breathwork combined with the unexpected is something she loves sharing with others.  Shannon hosts public and private group breathwork sessions in the Sea to Sky as well as private 1:1 sessions.  She is also the founder of UNLEASH Whistler.  Please feel free to reach out to her at 604.562.6494 or find her at @thecollectivealchemy if you want to join a session or just reach out to chat and learn more.

  • Have you met Erin Montgomery from Flourish Magazine?

In this week's episode we feature Erin Montgomery, the Editor-in-Chief at Flourish Magazine.

"I am freelance writer, journalism graduate, digital marketing specialist oh and did I mention I am also a single mom to three little ones! We are one busy little family but we figure it out. We live in Burlington, Ontario and I am constantly acting like a taxi driver for my competitive dancer, basketball player and the little babe who is always just along for the ride. Recently I started a little side hustle that I am so excited to share with everyone. I am the founder and editor over at Flourish Magazine (@flourishmagca) which is a print publication that is written for moms by moms. I wanted to create a magazine that moms could relate to, so we have filled it with real life experiences both humorous and serious and do our best to share real life insight with our readers. We really want moms to know that no matter what stage of motherhood they are in that they are not alone."

  • Have you met Danielle Leroux from Renew Retreats?

Danielle Leroux is the Founder of Renew Retreats: holistic hiking retreats and outdoor education for women in Vancouver, BC and beyond.

Danielle grew up in Toronto and was far from an outdoors lover, let alone hiker. As a kid, you could find her playing the flute and piano or creating a mess in the kitchen.

After completing her Bachelor of Music at Mount Allison University, Danielle moved to BC in 2012 to do her Master of Arts in Communication at Simon Fraser University.

She is now living that West Coast life and fallen in love with the mountains.

Since her first BC hike to Lighthouse Park in 2012, Danielle has gone onto do things she never fathomed she would, like: climb to a glacier at sunrise on Vancouver Island, run 3 marathons and a 50 km trail race, hike to extinct volcanoes in BC’s backyard and among the wild buffalo in California, complete a 160 km trek through the Alps, and start a business to bring these experiences and the positive impacts of hiking to other womxn.

After working in BC’s hospitality industry for five years, Danielle launched Renew Retreats in August 2019. This fall, she also became a Local Guide for Fjällräven North America and an Ambassador for Fjällräven Vancouver’s West Broadway Store.

  • Have you met Krista Gruen from Radiant Beauties?

When Krista was nineteen she left her hometown of Victoria, B.C. and started working as a singer/dancer on cruise ships. It didn’t take long to earn her sea legs and catch the travel bug.

Seven years and thirty-seven countries later, Krista hung up her feather backpack, and high heels and moved to Toronto. Soon after she found herself performing eight shows a week in the hit musical Mamma Mia! For the first time in her life, her bank account was full and she had a consistent job for (almost) a year. Krista’s days were free so she decided to go to school and get her beauty certificate.

Before she finished school Krista was already working for companies like TD Bank, Loreal, and Lululemon. A couple of years later she moved back to BC and started working for MAC Cosmetics. Since then she’s worked with several of the top wedding and headshot photographers in Vancouver as well as corporate clients like TELUS.

Krista is a business owner AND Mom of twin boys who turn four in April. The most common thing she hears is “I don’t want to look or feel like I’m wearing too much makeup”. If this sounds like something you would say then reach out to Krista so she can help you look like YOU on your most perfect day.
