This week, I'm highlighting an album that came out in the year 2016, Thrice's "To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere". This was my favorite record released in 2016, so I felt as if it needed to be remembered and honored appropriately.

To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere is the ninth studio album by American rock band Thrice. The album was released on May 27, 2016, through Vagrant Records. To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere is Thrice's first release after a four-year hiatus that lasted from mid-2012 to mid-2015, and the band's first album of original material in five years since 2011's Major/Minor. During the hiatus, most of the band members continued performing music and pursued other interests, which included moving to other cities or states with their new families.

After reuniting and performing sporadic festival dates in 2015, Thrice announced the band's intention to release a new album the following year. Because of the distance between the members' new homes, the demos for To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere were written, recorded, shared and worked on digitally using software programs that were not as prevalent before they went on hiatus. Produced by Eric Palmquist, the resulting recording was a hard rock, post-hardcore and grunge album that features songs with more politically and socially charged lyrics than those on previous Thrice albums.

Thrice formally announced the release of To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere in March 2016 and released two singles in support of the album; "Black Honey" in May 2016 and "Hurricane" in April 2017. The album managed to reach number 15 on the Billboard Hot 200, and received mostly positive reviews from critics; some were moved by the lyrical aspects, while many others praised the album's sonic diversity, especially the heavier parts. Because most members of Thrice settled down and started families during their hiatus, the band decided to be more selective about its touring schedules after reforming so the members could spend more time at home.

On today's episode, I speak with the very prolific Tim Grisnik! I was stoked to talk to Tim all about his many projects. Tim plays drums for Inspection 12, The Softer Side, The John Carver Band, and Gentlemen.

It was so much fun getting to know Tim. Inspection 12 was a huge influence on Gametime, so it was a lot of fun getting to pick his brain and learn about his story and the history of his bands and projects.

Inspection 12 is an American pop punk band from Jacksonville, Florida, founded by Robert Reid, Dan McLintock, John Comee and Scott Shad. They have released two full-length recordings internationally, one on Honest Don's Records and one on Suburban Home Records and Takeover Records. They have also released four full-length albums independently.

On today's edition of Flashback Friday's, I highlight The Maine's 2015 album "American Candy".

American Candy is the fifth studio album by American rock band The Maine, released on March 31, 2015, through 8123 Records. The album debuted at number 37 on the Billboard 200.

The Maine were teasing a new album in summer 2014, and then proceeded to announce that they would be writing new material in Heber, Arizona. Recording took place at Joshua Tree in California with Colby Wedgeworth acting as the producer. He also engineered and mixed the sessions. Recording place between November 12 and December 12. Ross Garfield was the drum technician at Drum Doctors. Tom Coyne mastered the recordings at Sterling Sound.

The album's sound has been described as alternative rock, indie rock, new wave, pop, pop rock and rock. "American Candy" was originally written for Forever Halloween. Drummer Pat Kirch explained that the song "didn't really fit" Forever Halloween, but the band revived it for American Candy "and made it fit."

On January 6, 2015, the group revealed that their new album was titled American Candy, and would be released in the spring. "English Girls" was made available for streaming on February 9, and was released as a single on February 10. On the same day, American Candy was announced for release, and the track listing and artwork was revealed. "Miles Away" was made available for streaming on March 10. "Same Suit, Different Tie" was made available for streaming on March 30. American Candy was released through 8123 Records on March 31.

On today's episode, I interview Chris Beeble who is an audio engineer/producer at The Blasting Room in Fort Collins Colorado.

Chris received a degree in Audio Production from The University of Denver, where he also studied jazz bass and composition. Being heavily influenced by Bill, Jason, and Andrew’s work, it has been Chris’ ambition to work at The Blasting Room since high school. With a musical background that spans far across the spectrum, Chris brings unique tools to the studio such as experience in synth programming, string arranging, and signal processor construction, among others. There is nothing he enjoys more than working with bands and seeing a song grow from start to finish.

The Blasting Room is a recording studio in Fort Collins, Colorado. Founded by members of the punk rock band All in 1994, it is owned and operated by musician Bill Stevenson (Descendents, Black Flag, All, Only Crime) and Jason Livermore. The studio is known for recording and producing many punk rock bands, with Stevenson and Livermore serving as in-house audio engineers and record producers.

On today's episode of Flashback Friday's, I'm highlighting a record that was released in 2014. It's the second full-length from We Are The In Crowd, and the album is called "Weird Kids".

We Are the In Crowd is an American rock band from Poughkeepsie, New York, formed in 2009. The band consists of Taylor Jardine, Jordan Eckes, Mike Ferri, Rob Chianelli, and Cameron Hurley. They released their debut EP, Guaranteed To Disagree, on June 8, 2010, and followed it up with their first full-length album, Best Intentions in 2011. Their second full-length album, Weird Kids, was released on February 18, 2014. The band announced a hiatus in February 2016. They have since performed their first shows in 6 years at Slam Dunk Festival 2021.

Weird Kids is the second studio album by American rock band We Are the In Crowd.

Weird Kids was produced, mixing, and recorded by John Feldmann. Tommy English and Zakk Cervini did additional production and mixing; Joe Gastwirt mastered the album.

On today's episode, I'm going to be doing a bit of a departure episode. I just got back from vacation and I have some podcast guests lined up for this weekend and next weekend.

On Monday, I learned on Instagram that two of my favorite bands, two of which we've already covered extensively on this podcast, are going to be doing a co-headlining show at Chain Reaction in Anaheim California on Friday night.

The two bands are none other than Taking Back Sunday and Jimmy Eat World.

Now, this is a pretty unique and special thing. Chain Reaction is a smaller Southern California venue and the thought of being one of the lucky souls watching these two iconic behemoth bands performing in such a place has me all sorts of excited.

Chain holds up to 250 people total, and they nearly shut down in 2020, due to Covid19 and being closed for so long.

Chain Reaction holds a special place in my heart. Gametime was fortunate enough to play there many times throughout our travels in a place they say glistens gold.

There is so much history at Chain. When you walk inside, the venues walls are covered with t-shirts from bands that have played there over the years. You can also find a good assortment of band stickers on things, too.

We played there with Don't Look Down, Dogwood, Off The Record, and many great local bands.

It's like most venues that have stood the test of time in that it's dark, it has a venue-like smell (usually stale booze spills), and the faintest hint of sweat.

My partner Pamela and I went to LA a couple of years ago and she surprised me with a ticket to a Chain Reaction show. Bristol to Memory, Odd Robot, and one other band played and it was so much fun. It had been at least 15 years since I had stood in that tiny all ages venue. It immediately transported me back.

Tragic Kingdom is the third studio album by American rock band No Doubt. It was released on October 10, 1995, by Trauma Records and Interscope Records. It was the final album to feature original keyboardist Eric Stefani, who left the band in 1994. The album was produced by Matthew Wilder and recorded in 11 studios in the Greater Los Angeles Area between March 1993 and October 1995. Between 1995 and 1998, seven singles were released from it, including "Just a Girl", which charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart; and "Don't Speak", which topped the Billboard Hot 100 Airplay and reached the top five of many international charts.

On today's episode of Having A Blast, I do a deep dive on a classic pop punk album, The Starting Line's debut full length "Say It Like You Mean It".

Say It Like You Mean It is the debut studio album by American rock band the Starting Line, following their debut EP With Hopes of Starting Over....

In April and May, the band went on tour with Brand New and Finch; the trek included an appearance at Skate and Surf Fest. Following this, the band went on a UK tour with New Found Glory and Finch. 

Between late June and mid-August, the band performed on the Warped Tour, appearing on the Drive-Thru stage. Say It Like You Mean It was made available for streaming on July 13, before being released on July 16 as a joint release by Drive-Thru and major label MCA Records. The band went on tour with Reel Big Fish in September and October. On October 27, a music video for "The Best of Me" was posted on Launch.com. The video starts with a guy attempting to impress a girl by playing music from a boombox outside of her residence. When the music stops, the band appear and start performing.

Hey there friends!

Welcome to the 14th edition of Flashback Fridays! I am way late on this one, but I suppose better late than never.

Today, I'm highlighting a record that came out in the year 2013. This was a fantastic year for music. I just looked at the playlist that I made for the year 2013 and it is completely stacked. There is a ton of music on that thing.

I had a lot of favorite records that year, one being the Paramore Self-Titled record. I think that record is their best record. Their opus, if you will.

But, today, I'm highlighting another female-fronted band from Australia. The record comes from the band Tonight Alive on Fearless Records. The album is called "The Other Side".

The record was released on September 6th. It was produced by Dave Petrovic and mixed by Dan Korneff.The Other Side is the second studio album by Australian rock band Tonight Alive.

This record sounds amazing. It's got guitar riffs. This band grew up listening to bands like Thrice and Rufio and you can hear the influence in their music. The album is full of hooks. Jenna McDougall has a fantastic voice. She's got her own voice, too. She's not just another Hailey Williams.

McDougall explained that there is "a lot more cohesive [because] I know my voice a lot better. I'm excited because the songs have got a very pop structure but [they've] still got a lot of edge."Vocalist Jenna McDougall spoke to Alternative Press about the record:"There are definitely some sad songs on the album, and I think there are a few heartbreakers, but there are also songs like 'The Fire' that's a super-liberating, empowering punk song. I'm so proud of that song because the lyrics are really passionate, affirmative and positive, but the music is really aggressive.

Today, I'm excited because I'm speaking with a good friend of mine, Mr. Steve Lydick from the bands A No Coast November, and Joceyln.

Steve and I go way back, our bands went on tour together back in 2009 with The American Life and A No Coast November, and we were also joined by The JV Allstars. This was one of the most fun tours I was ever a part of.

Steve has always been a profound guy, he's a smart and funny guy. I've always loved our conversations. I feel like it's always a life-giving conversation. One in which I take something really valuable away.

We talk about a lot of things in this convo. We talk about exercise, personal growth, personal transformation and development, and we talk about how our identity plays a role in that. We also talk a little bit about being in a band and how that carries over into now.

I really enjoyed this conversation, I think you will, too.
