A Christmas war movie that's actually more about coming of age in the shadow of death, Keith Gordon's A Midnight Clear casts Ethan Hawke as the leader of a squad of at-the-time rising stars, in what might be the first great performance of his career. It's also the first showcase of his natural ability with voiceover, most famously effective in First Reformed.

It’s a testament to Hawke’s then-emerging star power, pop cultured charisma, and slacker hotness, that the character of Troy Dyer, an uncompromisingly self-absorbed, “24-hour-a-day taste fascist” remains one of his most enduring and fondly remembered.
