How Then Shall We Think by Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church Charlotte NC

Words create. Words destroy. Words wound. Words heal.

Our world is inundated with words, and almost any word you choose—privilege, mask, immigrant—can become a fighting word, a dividing word, a bridge-burning word.

But is there any word from the Lord? Amidst all the punditry and posturing, is there a word that can heal what has been wounded, or recreate what has been destroyed? Who desires to listen beyond the trigger so as to hear, or speak, the peacemaking word from God?

Polarized. Partisan. Divided. Tribal.

Race. Gender. Sexuality. Religion. Politics.

Right. Left. Fox. CNN. MSNBC.

What might it mean to be a peacemaker, a reconciler, in the world as it is? Jesus blesses peacemakers. Paul says our ministry and message is reconciliation.

But how?

First, by reconciling ourselves to God’s love for all people. And then, by being channels of love in the world. A seed here. A word there. Like gold, holding together the broken pieces of a life, a church, a nation, the world.
