In February 2012 I had just returned to work as a P.E. teacher after having my youngest son George when tragedy struck my family. George died suddenly with no sign of illness in the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant on the 22nd February. Just days later Paul, my husband and the Daddy to my three children, took his own life traumatised by the loss of their son.
The tragedy of experiencing the sudden death of a child was compounded by the situation my husband and I found ourselves in at the hospital, having nowhere to privately grieve and say goodbye to our son. The family were offered no support and we were left to deal with the loss of both Paul and George alone.
Motivated by a desire to ensure others would not have the same devastating experience after losing a child suddenly in hospital, I set up the child bereavement charity ‘2 Wish Upon a Star’. To date the charity has raised over £1,900,000 exclusively from small public donations and local fundraising and 2 Wish Upon A Star is now an All Wales organisation helping hundreds of families every year who experience sudden and traumatic loss.
I am also very passionate about mental health and I regularly speak about my own struggles since losing my boys. I took part in a BBC documentary in 2017 ‘Mind Over Marathon’ raising awareness of mental health and I often speak out about mental health in men and following sudden bereavement.
I now work full time at 2 Wish Upon A Star and I am determined that every family in Wales who loses a child suddenly receives the support they truly deserve. The love and pride I have for my boys, along with my drive to succeed has seen the charity flourish.
I often share my story with police forces and health boards across Wales. It is only by working together we can make a true difference to families facing the hardest of times.
Educator, Psychotherapist, Podcast Host.
Having recently retired from her post as a primary school teacher in Ireland, in a career that spanned thirty years, Síle continues to educate, inspire and mentor in her new incarnation as a life and business coach, psychotherapist and success strategist. Síle works with formulas to help clients achieve mind-derived health optimisation. Teaching individuals and business communities about Causing an Effect as opposed to Cause and Effect, Síle is taking blueprints for best practice, from philosophy, to initiation, to mastery, one recovery programme at a time. Culture is key, when it comes to growth and expansion. Síle’s WHOLE & ONE master plan, frames the 3As of adaptability, authenticity and agility as non-negotiable in the architecture of growth mindset, at individual and organisational levels, for optimum results.
Thoughts are a locomotive to living intentionally, as opposed to living out of habit. Some thoughts are reflexive, but you can also think deliberately. Síle expounds the value of meta-cognition as a launch pad for achieving desired outcomes. When you learn how to think about, what you’ve been thinking about, you are no longer the programme, you are the observer of the programme, and from here you can change behavioural responses, to change outcomes. Knowledge, particularly psycho-education as well as techniques such as mindfulness, gratitude and self-care are the tools of the trade if you wish to live deliberately and optimise results. The WHOLE & ONE model uses mind hacks, to coach people and partnerships on how to make the requisite mind-set changes, to improve productivity and self-efficacy by managing self-talk, building a healthy relationship with anxiety, and by learning how to rewrite the narrative; tell yourself that different story. It’s like doing a bicep curl for your brain. WHOLE & ONE, you’ve got this!
I’m Deirdre, founder of StepUpStepIn. I am a mother, daughter, sister and loving loyal friend. However, as a professional woman, my greatest joy in life is to see all women shine with confidence in both their professional and personal lives.
I have spent the last 25 years leading teams and individuals through organisational and transformational change. My background is in the Technology Industry working at LinkedIn, IBM and Oracle in a range of senior leadership roles.
Throughout my career, I’ve made conscious efforts to champion those around me, however I observed that majority of the women I worked with needed extra guidance to help find their voice or overcome their self-limiting beliefs.
This passion has now become my purpose and I took the brave decision to leave the high paced corporate world. When I am not practising yoga, mediating or jumping into the Irish Sea, I am investing my time in coaching women. I now understand more than ever the need to create successful careers that positively impact them, their teams and the organisation. I draw on my extensive wealth of knowledge and experience from my own career.
As a Career and Confidence Coach, my style is to dance in the moment which allows greater flexibility of coaching and creates an environment for a deeper response to emerge.
I consider myself to be warm, engaging and empathetic. However, through my agile coaching approach I can easily pivot, which in turn challenges and helps gain a different perspective
