In this episode, we turn our attention to two subtle but powerful influences shaping much of modern Christianity: the prosperity gospel and moralistic therapeutic deism.
At first glance, both can sound close to biblical Christianity. The prosperity gospel teaches that faithfulness to God should result in blessing, success, and personal flourishing. Moralistic therapeutic deism, though less obvious, frames Christianity primarily as a system for being a good person, feeling better about life, and turning to God when help is needed. In both cases, the focus quietly shifts away from the gospel of Christ and toward the improvement of the self.
We begin by defining these ideas and exploring how they show up in everyday Christian language and church culture. Often they are not presented outright, but slowly shape how people think about God, suffering, success, and the purpose of faith.
In this episode, we discuss why these messages can be so appealing, how they differ from the historic gospel, and why the Christian faith is ultimately not about personal prosperity or self-improvement, but about what God has accomplished for sinners through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
