You can love someone deeply and still not feel safe with them.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman explores the confusing place where love, betrayal, forgiveness, fear, and trauma collide. After relational betrayal, the heart may still long for connection while the nervous system remembers the injury and tries to protect against being hurt again.
Dr. Lana explains why forgiveness does not automatically restore trust, why triggers are not always evidence that healing has failed, and why genuine safety must be demonstrated through honesty, consistency, accountability, empathy, boundaries, and changed behavior over time.
Healing does not require pretending the past never happened or forcing yourself to feel safe before trustworthiness has been established. It means learning to recognize what is happening inside you, distinguish an old trigger from a present threat, and allow safety to be rebuilt one experience at a time.
Can you love someone and still not feel safe with them?
Shame rarely tells someone to move toward help. It tells them to hide.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman explores the difference between guilt and shame and why unresolved guilt can begin changing the way a person sees themselves. Guilt says, “I did something wrong.” Shame says, “There is something wrong with me.” And once shame attaches itself to identity, secrecy and isolation often follow.
Through Psalm 38, Proverbs 28, and James 5, Dr. Lana examines why confession is not about humiliation but about stepping out of hiding. Healing does not require telling everyone everything, but it does require honesty with God and, when appropriate, safe people who can meet truth with wisdom and grace.
Grace does not minimize what happened or erase consequences. It allows someone to tell the truth, take responsibility, pursue change, and still believe that their worst moment does not get the final word over their identity.
What has shame convinced you that you have to keep hidden?
Sometimes faith means standing still. Other times, faith means taking the next step.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman explores the tension in Exodus 14 between surrender and action. Standing still can mean releasing the outcome, stopping the frantic attempt to control what only God can control, and listening for what actually belongs to you. But surrender does not eliminate responsibility. There comes a moment when healing, recovery, and growth require movement.
Dr. Lana brings together biblical truth and the practical realities of addiction and recovery, explaining why prayer is essential but cannot replace participation. Recovery may require honesty, accountability, counseling, new routines, boundaries, support, and repeatedly choosing healthier responses when old patterns are triggered.
God is not asking anyone to solve the entire future today. He may simply be asking for the next faithful step.
Where have you been standing still when God is asking you to move?
Crisis has a way of making fear feel like truth.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman walks through Psalm 119 and explores what happens when pain, anxiety, shame, or uncertainty begin shaping the story someone tells themselves. Feelings are real and important, but they are not always reliable interpreters of what is true.
Dr. Lana shares how God’s Word can become an anchor when emotions are loud, why understanding does not always come before obedience, and how even in circumstances that cannot be controlled, there are still meaningful choices to make. The crisis may remain, but a person’s posture within it can change.
Understanding healthy boundaries is important. Living them is where change begins.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman wraps up the boundaries series with the Law of Activity and the Law of Exposure. She explores why insight alone does not create transformation, why avoiding difficult conversations often creates deeper problems later, and why healthy relationships require both courage and honesty.
Dr. Lana also explains how hidden or “secret” boundaries often surface through resentment, withdrawal, irritability, or emotional distance. Healthy boundaries grow in the light, where truth can be spoken clearly, safely, and with grace.
Boundaries are not built in one dramatic moment. They are built one courageous decision at a time.
What is one boundary you need to stop thinking about and start living?
Healthy boundaries are not just about knowing when to say yes or no. They begin with what is happening in the heart.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman continues through the Ten Laws of Boundaries with the Laws of Motivation, Evaluation, Proactivity, and Envy. She explores why boundaries should never become weapons, why another person’s reaction cannot determine whether a boundary is healthy, and how resentment can sometimes signal that something needs attention before a relationship reaches a breaking point.
Dr. Lana also looks at comparison and envy as invitations to turn attention back toward personal growth, stewardship, and what God is developing within.
Healthy boundaries are not ultimately about changing someone else. They are part of becoming healthier ourselves.
What is God trying to grow in you right now?
Trying to control what was never yours to control is exhausting.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman continues the conversation on boundaries with the Law of Power and the Law of Respect. She explores the difference between helplessness and powerlessness, why surrender is not weakness, and how much anxiety can come from trying to change another person’s choices, honesty, recovery, or behavior.
Dr. Lana also explains why healthy love respects another person’s freedom to choose, even when those choices are painful. You may not be able to control someone else, but you still have power over your own responses, boundaries, honesty, growth, and obedience.
What have you been trying to control that was never actually yours to control?
Caring about someone does not mean carrying responsibility for everything they do.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman continues the conversation on boundaries with the Law of Responsibility and a distinction that can change the way relationships feel: you are responsible to people, but you are not responsible forthem.
Dr. Lana explores why love, fear, guilt, and even the desire for control can lead people to take ownership of someone else’s emotions, healing, recovery, choices, or relationship with God. Releasing that responsibility does not mean becoming indifferent. It means learning to love with honesty, grace, healthy boundaries, and open hands.
What are you carrying that God never actually asked you to carry?
Sometimes love steps in too quickly.
In this episode of He Sees You, Dr. Lana Lyman continues the conversation on boundaries with the Law of Sowing and Reaping. She explores why consequences are not simply punishment, but often one of the ways people learn, grow, and finally face the reality of their choices.
Dr. Lana also shares from her own experience of loving someone through addiction and the painful realization that good intentions can still create unhealthy outcomes. Helping strengthens someone. Enabling protects them from consequences they may need to experience.
There is a difference between carrying someone’s burden and carrying their responsibility.
What if stepping back is not giving up, but making room for God to work?
A new episode of He Sees You with Dr. Lana Lyman is now available.
Sometimes exhaustion is not coming from everything happening in your own life. It is coming from carrying things that were never yours to carry.
Someone else’s emotions. Their choices. Their consequences. Their healing. Their approval.
In Episode 4, Dr. Lana talks about what healthy boundaries actually are, why they are not the same as walls, and how they can create healthier relationships instead of pushing people away.
She also introduces the Ten Laws of Boundaries and explores what it means to love without controlling, care without rescuing, and take responsibility for what God has actually entrusted to you.
