The British Heart Foundation (BHF) highlights that atrial fibrillation (AF) significantly increases the risk of stroke, potentially by up to five times, and is a contributing factor in about 20% of all strokes. An irregular heartbeat in AF can cause blood clots to form, which may travel to the brain and cause a stroke.
