As is usually the case, there is disagreement on the lists – despite how many “Blue Bloods” are on each of the lists. Once the “Top Five” is pinned, the guys welcome special guest, Joe Coletti, a Fellow at the John Locke Foundation, to talk about the importance of local, private organizations in a civil society. Joe outlines the reason why relationships, mutual accountability and subsidiarity often lead to more effective solutions to our problems than government programs

Eschewing the standard opening format, the guys take on the most divisive debate in America and provide their unique perspectives. Terry takes a look at facts surrounding school shooting incidents and Jon gives his commentary on what’s wrong with the current debate.  No matter your view on the topic, the guys make a good case that data, facts, reason and common sense should govern the debate rather than emotion, passion and vitriol.

As the Top Five is counted out, the guys delve into a discussion about what it means to be “masculine” today and how the left is demonizing certain characteristics that we formerly considered beneficial and useful. Terry highlights a piece written by National Review’s David French, in which he highlights the progressive movement’s attempt to conflate equality with sameness and to remove biological or chromosomal differences between the sexes. Looking at the issue as policy advocates and free-market thinkers is not sufficient; Jon and Terry also look at the issue as fathers of boys and young men.

Although the Founders disagreed about how to cultivate an educated citizenry, most of them agreed that the “diffusion of knowledge” was essential for the preservation of our representative democracy.  Were they right?  Arguably, earlier generations of Americans had an abysmal understanding of economics, politics, and history, but the nation still thrived.  Perhaps the ignorance displayed by their contemporaries is simply par for the course and ultimately a marginal concern.  If civic literacy does matter, we need to consider reforms to institutions that undermine it.  Summer research intern Will Tomlinson joins Terry and Kory to debate the future of civic literacy and civic participation in the United States

Once the bell rings on the Top Five list, the guys grade the first 12 months of the Trump administration with a look into cabinet picks, policy moves and other key metrics. You might be surprised by the grades the president receives.

In this week’s episode, Terry and Kory tackle higher education.  According to the Chronicle of Higher Education, only 61.2 percent of students who enrolled in four-year colleges in North Carolina graduated in six years.  And those who graduate seem to lack the skills and knowledge necessary to be successful in the workplace.  Why, then, do lawmakers routinely spend billions on state systems of higher education and underprepared students incur sizable student loan debt for a substandard education?  Perhaps Mark Twain was on to something when he observed, “Some people get an education without going to college. The rest get it after they get out.”
