What happens when the wellness industry collides with social media culture? A whole lot of pretty pictures that might be masking unhealed wounds.
As we celebrate our one-year podcast anniversary (with nearly 5,000 downloads across 48 countries!), we're taking a hard look at the difference between genuine healing and performative wellness. From theta chambers to colonics, we've tried countless trending treatments over the past year – but has any of it actually helped us grow, or have we just gotten better at packaging our chaos for content?
The "healed but still petty" trope runs deep in gay culture. You know the type – they post thoughtful therapy reflections while simultaneously sub-tweeting their ex, caption shirtless selfies with profound quotes about inner peace, and sage their apartment right before inviting toxic energy back in. We're calling out this behavior because, let's be honest, we're guilty of it too.
Real growth isn't always Instagram-worthy. Those spontaneous, unplanned moments when we're truly present often provide more authentic healing than the carefully curated wellness routines we share online. Our "Healing or Instagram Bait" quiz highlights just how blurry the line between genuine self-care and performative posturing can be. (Spoiler alert: burning sage while blasting a playlist titled "hot girl spirituality" might fall into the latter category.)
We also dive into imposter syndrome – that persistent feeling of inadequacy despite evidence of competence – which disproportionately affects marginalized communities, including LGBTQ+ individuals. Could this explain our collective obsession with proving our wellness through visible achievements and healing aesthetics?
Share your own stories of performative healing or genuine wellness breakthroughs – we'd love to hear what's working (or not working) in your journey. Message us on Instagram @unfamouslyunwell or email us at [email protected]!
