Now a little bit more about Pam: Pam Duncan is a professor of neurology at the Wake Forest Baptist Health. She holds a Ph.D. in epidemiology. Dr. Duncan is a clinician, researcher, and advocate for transforming stroke care at the policy, health system, and patient levels. 

She has secured and successfully implemented millions of dollars of funded studies from NINDS, NIA, PCORI, AHA and industry-at-large to measure post-stroke recovery, develop interventions, and evaluate those interventions for stroke recovery and secondary prevention to provide evidence guidelines and policy papers to drive change.  Pam is now transitioning her career from an academic one involving research studies. Her next career, via her new company, Care Directions, will look to scale innovative programs and products, and consult with agencies and health systems, to transform care within their organizations.

Dr. Duncan has received numerous awards, but her most cherished one is the AHA/ASA David Sherman Award she earned in 2020.  The David Sherman award recognizes lifelong contribution to advancing stroke care, research and mentoring the next generation of clinical researchers. Dr. Duncan is the only woman and the first non-physician to receive this award.

The good news is that there are plenty of services available to help those who have autism... and those who support them. Dr. Lubbers also contributes to educational activities to increase awareness of epilepsy.

Prior to joining CURE Epilepsy, she spent 15 years in a large pharmaceutical company as a drug discovery scientist. Importantly, Dr. Lubbers' sister suffered from intractable epilepsy from an early age and her mother was diagnosed later in life.  The impact of epilepsy on her family has fueled her passion to find better healthcare solutions for people with epilepsy.

Do or you someone you know have cerebral palsy (CP)? It’s a lifelong disabling condition that usually begins at birth and affects millions of people all over the world. The good news is that, according to my guest expert, progress is being made toward improving the lives of those who have CP— and possibly even preventing or limiting the impact of CP in the future. That guest expert is Michael Pearlmutter, Executive Director of Cerebral Palsy Research Alliance Foundation (CPARF).

He established a prosperous fundraising model that included global partnerships, cultivated relationships with scientists, helped build a Scientific Advisory Board with more than 300 years of collective experience, and revolutionized the organization’s grant administration process — all while shaping the organization into a thought leader in its space and strengthening relationships with the US Olympic and Paralympic Committee, the US Anti-Doping Agency, Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Hockey League, the PGA TOUR, and others.

Michael also previously served as the Executive Director of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership, a multi-partisan nonprofit educational organization. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in quantitative economics from the United States Naval Academy.

Michael served in the US Navy as a submarine officer before earning his Masters in Business Administration from Babson College. As we learned in the first part of this two-part series, metabolic dysfunction, sometimes referred to as metabolic syndrome, is at the root of such things as fatty liver disease, obesity, kidney malfunction, diabetes, renal failure, cognitive disorders like Alzheimer’s disease and brain fog… and so many other conditions that adversely affect our health and well-being.

In Part 2, I'll continue my conversation with our guest expert, Dr. Robert Lustig, on the subject of metabolic syndrome.

On this episode, Dr. Lustig will cover such things as (1) how do we determine how "processed" a food is, especially if we are in the supermarket, (2) what are the two kinds of carbs, and which one is better for you, (3) why might COVID mortality be higher in the more developed countries of the world, and (4) what are some things Dr. Lustig and his colleagues are working on to address the problems linked to processed foods, low fiber intake, and high sugar consumption.

Dr. Robert H. Lustig, M.D., M.S.L. is Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology and a Member of the Institute for Health Policy Studies at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Lustig is a neuroendocrinologist, with expertise in metabolism, obesity, and nutrition. He is one of the leaders of the current “anti-sugar” movement that is changing the food industry. He has dedicated his retirement from clinical medicine to help to fix the food supply any way he can, to reduce human suffering and to salvage the environment.

Dr. Lustig graduated from MIT in 1976, and received his M.D. from Cornell University Medical College in 1980. He received his Masters of Studies in Law (MSL) degree at University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 2013. He is the author of the popular books Fat Chance (2012), The Hacking of the American Mind (2017), and Metabolical: The Lure and the Lies of Processed Food, Nutrition, and Modern Medicine (2021).

Dr. Lustig is also the Chief Science Officer of the non-profit Eat REAL, and he is on the Advisory Boards of the UC Davis Innovation Institute for Food and Health, the Center for Humane Technology, Simplex Health, Levels Health, and ReadOut Health. Hi everyone.

What if you, your child, your parent, or someone else you loved had a disease that could be prevented or possibly even cured by understanding your or their personal genetic makeup? I’m talking about anything from a rare disorder, to epilepsy, to cancer. Wow! Like how wonderful would that be?

Well, the good news is that’s not farfetched anymore. In fact, progress like this is being made almost every day as researchers, scientists, and clinicians study the makeup of our bodies, the human genome.  And one of those genome scientists is Dr. Charles Steward, and he’s my guest expert on this episode, episode #8, of Health Care on the Horizon.

On this episode, Dr. Steward will share his knowledge and experience about such things as: (1) when did the effort to map the human genome begin-- and where are we now with that,  (2) why the effort to understand the human genome and benefit from that is a global exercise, (3) what are some specific diseases which genomic research is having a positive impact on, and 4) what impact our understanding of the human genome could potentially have on us—individually-- over the next decade and beyond.

Dr. Charles Steward is an internationally renowned patient advocate and genome scientist, who has spent nearly 29 years working with the human genome and rare diseases. He spent 22 years at the Wellcome Sanger Insititute, which is where he did his PhD and has co-authored numerous publications. Charles has taught extensively about the human genome at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom, and internationally with the Wellcome Trust. He’s also worked with Congenica, and currently is the Head of Patient and Participant Engagement at Genomics England.

Dr. Steward is also the father of two children with severe neurological disorders who have been through numerous UK-based genomic studies, including Genomics England's 100000 Genomes Project. He’s also a patron and trustee for Hope for Epilepsy London.

If you had a rare disease, would you be fighting hard to find a way to make life better for others who also had it?  Would you be working to find a cure for it? Well, that’s what my guest expert, Tara Zier, founder and president of The Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation (SPSRF) is doing.

Have you ever heard of Stiff Person Syndrome?  Well, if you haven’t, you’re not alone. In fact, until very recently, I knew nothing about it myself. It’s a very rare disease that is extremely difficult to diagnose and can be extraordinarily debilitating, both physically and psychologically.

In this episode of Health Care on the Horizon, you’ll learn about such things as (1) who gets Stiff Person Syndrome, (2) how it presents itself, (3) why it IS so difficult to diagnose and treat, and (4) where to get help if you or someone you care about either has-- or wonders if they may have-- Stiff Person Syndrome. Finally, and perhaps most significantly, you’ll learn about the determined effort to get to the bottom of this disease, and make it much easier to diagnose and treat in the future.

That effort is being capably and persistently led by our guest expert today, Tara Zier. Dr. Tara Zier is the founder and president of The Stiff Person Syndrome Research Foundation, which she established in 2019 to raise awareness and funds for better treatments and a cure. In 2017, Tara was forced to leave a twenty-year career in dentistry and stop her practice of karate (she’s a 3rd degree black belt, by the way), due to Stiff Person Syndrome.

In 2021, The SPSRF was selected to receive a three-year “Rare As One” grant from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. And in 2022, Tara established a Medical Advisory Board which includes neurologists from Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University School, and the University of Athens Medical School.
