Scientists at the University of Poitiers tested 24 national-level swimmers over four weeks. They split them into dry-land strength, electrical stimulation, and control groups.
Researchers measured 50-metre front-crawl times, stroke length, stroke rate and arm-extension peak torque on an isokinetic dynamometer before training, after four weeks, and four weeks later.
The electrical stimulation group improved swimming velocity by 1.7 %. Peak torque rose in concentric, isometric and eccentric conditions. Gains matched the strength group and lasted after training stopped. The control group showed no change.
These facts suggest electrical stimulation helps swimmers boost sprint performance, build upper-body power and maintain continuous training with less joint stress.
