For most of the 20th century, New Zealand led the world in rates of edentulism, the total loss of teeth. The oral health demands of older people were often centred on providing, maintaining and replacing dentures. This situation is changing rapidly as post-war baby boomers enter retirement, many keeping their teeth. Professor Thomson describes the immense impact this will have on our dental system.
