The largest for-profit nursing home chain in the U.S., Genesis HealthCare, received citations at 43 percent of its 400 facilities in 2018. The violations are shocking: cockroaches behind an oven, mouse droppings, debris lodged in a meat slicer, flies hovering around meat, kitchen staff handling raw meat without gloves then touching plates and utensils, months-old expired food left in kitchens.

Over 40% of Nursing Home Residents Report Abuse. 95% Report Neglect. Residents with dementia or Alzheimer’s may have difficulty communicating. Others may be hesitant to report abuse or neglect for fear of staff retribution. If you suspect that your loved one may suffer from nursing home neglect or abuse, look for signs. Victim becomes upset and/or agitated, withdrawn or non-communicative, especially around nursing home staff.
