In episode 13 of the Healthcare India Podcast, I look at Predicitve Analytics and the role it can play in the growth of healthcare in India. In 2015, Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie created a stir in the medical industry when she went public with her double-mastectomy (breast removal). She was carrying a mutated gene BRCA1 which increases the chances of breast and ovarian cancer, a condition that killed her mother some years ago and also impacted her grandmother. It is believed that this condition impacts the Ashkenazi Jewish Women, where 1 in 40 has this mutation and have a higher precedence of both breast and ovarian cancer. While going public with her procedure is a boost in the arm for many women who felt empowered to take this decision, it was a giant leap for predictive analytics in healthcare.

Healthcare India Podcast is now 10 episodes strong and, in this journey, we have covered a lot of ground. In this Tenth episode, I want to give some more details about our disease surveillance program pilot with IET.

India started the IDSP, Integrated Disease Surveillance Program with funding from the World Bank in 2004. This was a 10-year program to track 33 disease conditions in India. The key drivers for this program were the Cholera outbreak in Delhi in 1988 and the Plague outbreak in Surat in 1994

IET’s disease surveillance project is a very radical and ambitious approach to looking at disease surveillance from the view of unstructured data. The project looks at three disease conditions- Malaria, Dengue, and Chikungunya. It will track all publicly available data on digital media to track their spread and patterns in the growth of the conditions. The timing of the project is perfect as we are in the monsoons. These are the times when these three disease conditions spike. Based on our initial analysis, we would identify regions, and cities where the diseases are spiking, and correlate them with the on-ground data to build a model that can be scaled and used across the country for all key disease conditions. This is a first-of-its-kind project and we are collaborating with our partners like PATH and Siemens Healthineers, along with volunteers from IET who collectively bring together almost 60 years of experience in healthcare.

Fantastic news this week as Apollo Hospitals was Awarded HIMSS Tage 6 award for Our Patient- EMR, Digital Imaging, and Infrasturue, This makes Apollo only the second hospital to be awarded Stage 6 for digital imaging and one of first in Asia. Congratulations to Group CIO Arvind Sivaramakrishnan and hopefully this will inspire others to push for excellence in digital health.

Did you read that right Disney? Yes of course Disney. 

The Disney Corporation does run hospitals which are one of the best runs in the US. Fred Lee also wrote a wonderful book called "If Disney Ran Your Hospital" a must-read if you are a health leader or just an interested individual. There are three key areas for patient experience, they are 

1) Admission

2) Key interactions before and after the procedure

3) Discharge

From a patient experience point of view, all these three have to be managed. I also discuss my experience with a hospital that did not go too very well. Do listen in and share your stories as well. In episode 7 of the Healthcare India, Podcast Dr Vikram Venkateswaran talks about the Digital Disease Surveillance pilot working with IET, CHRI, and Siemens Healthineers. The pilot looks at 3 critical disease conditions, Dengue, Malaria, and Chikungunya. 

The project will focus on developing a predictive model that can be replicated across the country. This will feed into the Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. In episode 6 of the Healthcare India, Podcast Dr. Vikram Venkateswaran reflects on the growing Cyber Security threat that confronts healthcare organizations in India. It is believed that Indian healthcare institutions like hospitals, pharma companies, and vaccine manufacturers faced almost 7 million cyber incidents in August-November 2020. Globally it is believed that 68% of healthcare organizations faced cyber incidents that disrupted non-critical clinical processes and 28% had disruptions in critical areas like ICU.

Most hackers use the ransomware attacks in India, locking in critical files and data and ensuring that the ransom is paid. In other instances, they remove the data from the organization to sell it on the dark web fetches upwards of $50 per health record.

Dr. Vikram looks at 5 key steps that need to be taken to preserve the identity, security, and confidentiality of patients, employees, and partners for healthcare organizations
