  • Dr. Doug McGuff - Body by Science - How Much Weight Training do You Really Need to Get Results?

Dr. Doug McGuff is a full time emergency physician who became interested in physical conditioning when he was just 15 years old. In his teens, Doug had a love for bicycle motocross so he fashioned his garage to become his own mini gym. When he decided to start training in a real gym, he began working as a janitor to pay for his membership. It was there where he found Arthur Jones’ book, which became his stepping stone to competing in pro bicycle motocross. The sport paved the way to fund his college tuition and medical schooling.

Today, Doug discusses the importance of recovery, how a minimalist workout can provide maximum results, and why he says steady state cardio isn’t something people should be focusing on.

"If you want to try to be superhuman you have to realize you're only human.” Doug McGuff

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • What most people don't calculate is that you not only have to manage volume and intensity, but you also have to manage your recovery as if you're a high level athlete.
    • The metabolic adaptations that are generated from high intensity exercises.
    • Exercise is kind of like fasting. They both stimulate apoptosis and autophagy but it has to be done intermittently.
    • Recovery varies from person to person, some recover fast, others slow.
    • Our culture has romanticized over training and we conflate it with training for getting actual results.
    • Even for just 12-15 minutes, a proper workout routine will do wonders when it comes to your fitness goals.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Appropriate, intense, brief, infrequent, strength training and exercise is going to be the bridging factor for the life extension technology that's coming down the pike.
    • Anything done chronically is going to have negative returns.

  • Erwan Le Corre Natural Movement for optimal Fitness, health & wellness

Erwan Le Corre is the founder of MovNat, a lifestyle program geared towards helping others get connected to nature through physical movement. MovNat is also a practice based on natural movement skills such as running, dancing, climbing, and even manipulating heavy objects. He dedicates his life not only to improve people’s efficiency when doing natural movements, but also to “bring back something done before.”

Today, Erwan shares us the story of MovNat, his approach to exercise and training, and why he thinks people need to get re-connected with nature.

"Functional strength is everything we do.” Erwan Le Corre

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Erwan focused on two points when he created Movnat: To give back natural movement to the world and to come up with an effective program to teach it.
    • Strength is not just about power, but how you put strength to use with skills and techniques necessary in the real world.
    • Our modern day conveniences don't require us to move very much.
    • His approach is not just with intensity but by improving technique through position and breathing, and creating a balance between tension and relaxation.
    • Most of us have that inch-wide, mile-deep focus. We're in some sort of movement deficit.
    • MovNat can work both indoors and outdoors. Indoor training allows people do hone their movements safely and in a scalable and progressive manner. Outside, it’s nonexistent in nature. It’s a take it or leave it proposition and can be dangerous.
    • What they teach is a realistic evaluation of each person’s movement ability.
    • One of the best exercises to practice natural movement is by doing a Turkish Get-Up.

    Key Takeaways:

    • It’s important to understand the importance of nature thru movement.
    • We need physical competency and preparedness for the real world.

  • Dr Sylvia Tara - The Secret Life of Fat - The Science Behind Fat Loss, Health and Wellness

The Secret Life of Fat - The Science Behind Fat Loss, Health and Wellness with Dr Sylvia Tara

Sylvia Tara has a PhD in biochemistry and studied Alzheimer’s and Neurology. She also has an MBA and has worked with large biotech companies around the world. Along the line, she noticed how she was putting on weight which she found odd since her friends and colleagues weren’t having the same weight issues despite sharing similar eating habits. She decided to find out why fat acts differently in people and she has spent five years studying until she came out with her book called, The Secret Life of Fat.

Today, Sylvia gives us a good rundown on why fat is not just fat and definitely not something we should strive to remove at all cost. She also explains how our bodies are different from one another, which is a large factor when it comes to weight gain and how a person responds to a type of diet.

"We gain weight in many different ways. It's not just sloth and gluttony.” Dr. Sylvia Tara

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Fat is not just fat, something we have to remove at all costs. It's actually an endocrine organ and the body needs it.
    • Genetics, microbiome, age, hormones, gender, they all play a role in fat metabolism.
    • We lose fat burning hormones as we age and this is made evident when fat gets stored in places where our fat burning hormones aren’t as prominent.
    • The diet industry is filled with books and programs that encourage a one-size fits all approach when it's obviously not true.
    • Some people need to eat less than someone who is at a target weight naturally. You have to find a diet that works for you long term.
    • Leptin is the master hormone and controller in the body.
    • If you can't stay on a diet, you won't be successful.

    Key Takeaways:

    • People respond to food and exercise differently. If a diet or exercise is not working it doesn't mean you’re stuck with being overweight forever. You just have to find out what works for you.
    • Different diets work for different people. Not only does a diet have to work biologically, but also socially and psychologically as well.
    • Your body will do everything to keep the fat on. Don't think of it as depressing; think of that as empowering. You know what to do so use it as a motivation to help keep the weight off.

  • Dr. Mark Shannan - Principals of healthy living, nutrition and longevity

On today’s episode of Fitfluential Radio, Kevin is joined by Dr. Mark Shannan, a second-generation chiropractor and nutritionist with a nutrition and lifestyle-based chiropractic practice here in Austin, Texas with his father. Dr. Mark joins us on the show today to share his passion and motivation behind his new book, The Original Design for Health, as well as dive deep into the various critical aspects of balancing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

We discuss how the wheat of today is significantly different from that of biblical times, how the overall population vastly misunderstands what true health and wellness really is, and the role that social media and marketing agencies have played in impacting the consumer’s misunderstanding of proper health, wellness, and fitness.

“My opinion is that there is a God and he wanted health and nutrition to be simple.” – Dr. Mark Shannon

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • What motivated Dr. Mark to write his book?
    • How the general view and understanding about proper health, wellness, and fitness has evolved over the last several generations.
    • How social media and marketing campaigns have fueled the inaccurate and misunderstood beliefs of consumers today.
    • The foundation is “real food for real people.”
    • The vast majority of people do not realize the long-term health effects associated with their modern eating habits.
    • When the body gets food that has been significantly altered from its original state – like wheat – it doesn’t recognize it, doesn’t know what to do with it, and – many times – it will trigger an inflammatory response.
    • Why it’s important for doctors to get a full picture of a patient’s overall health – including physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional – instead of just treating the symptoms of an illness.
    • The four pillars of health.
    • Just because you look fit and healthy on the outside, doesn’t mean you are on the inside.
    • Don’t confuse vanity for good health.

    The Takeaway:

    • Everyone knows that a plant has four things that control its health – air, water, sun, and soil. You can’t remove one of those factors and the plant still be healthy. Humans are the same way – we have our four pillars of health. We can’t truly live healthily – the way God intended – if one or more of those pillars are missing or failing.

  • Krisstina Wise - Health, Wellness & Longevity via Investing in Your Own Body Healthcare

Krisstina Wise is known as a real estate genius, financial coach, and podcast host. She was always a go-getter, making sure she makes use of her time and money in the most efficient ways possible to not only accomplish her goals, but also make sure her successes lead to money and lots of it. She achieved what she set out to do, but at the cost of her own health.

She has since embarked on the journey to learn more about how to keep her health in line with her goals as well, as how to be always in touch with her inner self, despite all things that may cause distractions.

Today, Krisstina talks about her health journey, her opinions on our healthcare system, and her tips on how people can invest in their health according to what they expect their body to accomplish.

"If you were a billionaire you'd give your last billion dollars to get your health back if that's what it cost.” Krisstina Wise

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Krisstina was always going for the hustle and it yielded magnificent results. This model worked well until it didn’t and shortly found herself in her death bed just days after celebrating her recent accomplishments.
    • She thought she was the epitome of good health with what she knew about health and wellness before being in her death bed. She was so into accomplishments and social circles that she overlooked her health. In the end, she consulted with a functional practitioner and cost her $250,000.00 to get her life back on track.
    • She spent $250,000.00 because her body was her best asset.
    • She realized none of her achievements mattered compared to her family and her own health and personal happiness. She also realized we should change the way we approach our healthcare system.
    • We invest very little in our health; our body is our number one asset. When we don't have our body we can't make money or live a meaningful life.
    • She also likened the way we should care for our body to how we care for cars.
    • Our body is meant to go fast but we also have to make sure we invest in their constant maintenance to perform at that level.
    • She says people have three freedoms to achieve: Political, Health, and Financial freedom.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Money matters more than anything but it’s not about the money.
    • You have to know how much money is enough. When you’re able to quantify that, you become more content with life.
    • When your health is taken away there is no freedom.
    • Invest on your health based on how much your body, your main asset, is worth.

  • Dave Scott - Ketogenic Diet, Intermittent Fasting for Endurance Athletes

Dave Scott is a triathlete and is best known for being the first six-time Ironman Triathlon Hawaii Champion. His career all started when he did his first triathlon and decided to make a career out of it. He has a background in physiology and learned how to train endurance athletes. He has since made a name for himself in the fitness industry.

Today we’re going to talk about Dave’s take on adapting a ketogenic diet for endurance training and sports, his advice on how endurance athletes can transition to a ketogenic diet, and great tips and suggestions on how to not just get into ketosis but stay there without sacrificing your food choices.

"The Ketogenic diet is really something that is long term for health ramifications.” Dave Scott

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Carbo loading or a high carb diet was the norm in endurance athletes for a long time.
    • Most athletes who have grown used to a high carb diet will have a much harder time transitioning towards a ketogenic diet.
    • If you’re a high carb athlete, you have to introduce a ketogenic diet at a much slower pace.
    • Dave gives three pieces of advice on what to cut when starting a ketogenic diet and they are sugar drinks which are practically sweetened water, grain sources except amaranth, and anything that is packaged.
    • Focus on fiber when it comes to carbs and the best source of fiber are vegetables.
    • For a good fat-source menu, Dave suggests eating grass-fed beef, avocados, eggs, and walnuts among other things.
    • A ketogenic diet is a lot like a paleo diet but focus is on healthy fat.
    • For most athletes, 100 g of healthy fat is too much but that’s pretty bare in a ketogenic diet.
    • Nuts and seeds are a good source of healthy fat plus you can bring them with you wherever you go. Snack on them instead of the usual “snacks” when you feel like chewing something.
    • There’s a thing called ketogenic powder which is around 70% fat and can be used as a meal replacement or as an alternative to the usual post-workout shake which usually has sugar or excessive carb content.
    • You won’t lose muscle when you’re in a ketogenic diet.
    • Dave says dark chocolate (around 85% dark and above) is good even for an evening snack.

    Key Takeaways:

    • If you eat an excess amount of carbs, you are elevating your cortisol levels. Cortisol reduces HGH which is bad for recovery specially when you're about to sleep.
    • Do not take sugar or anything sweet post-workout or it will diminish your HGH.

  • Elle Russ - Paleo Thyroid Solution - Lose Stubborn Excess Weight - Part 2

Elle Russ is the author of The Paleo Thyroid Solution, a book she wrote for people who have thyroid issues and aren’t getting proper treatment despite consulting many doctors and other popular practitioners.

In part 2 of our interview, Elle gives us a quick walkthrough on the various terms surrounding the thyroid gland, gives tips on what supplements to take, and the importance of sleep when it comes to thyroid health.

“Don't ever let a doctor tell you you're always gonna have to deal with X because you have hypothyroidism. It's just not the case.” Elle Russ

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Elle shares the definition of T3, T4, and TSH and why these three are important when it comes to diagnosing thyroid disorders.
    • The T3 hormone is essential to life and is the most important hormone in the body. It’s a powerful fat burner which explains why people with hypothyroidism end up getting fat as their thyroid is not producing as much T3 as it should be.
    • T4 is a pro hormone that’s released together with T3. It’s a hormone that eventually gets converted to T3.
    • Unused T4 is converted to what we call Reverse T3. It is the inactive form of T3 and is the body’s way of clearing out excess T4 in the body.
    • Overtraining, starvation leads to massive conversion of Reverse T3. It also ends up affecting sex hormones.
    • When testing for thyroid status, Free T3 usually corresponds to how someone feels.
    • A high fat diet allows you to live on a minimal amount of calorie intake, enough to prevent the body from thinking you're starving and stop it from doing things you don’t want it to do specially when it comes to your thyroid.

    Key Takeaways:

    • It’s important to maintain steady blood sugar levels as these are indicative of steady adrenals.
    • Adequate amounts of vitamin D, B12, Folate, and Selenium are important when it comes to thyroid health.
    • Sleep for adrenals, for the hormones, and everything else.

  • Elle Russ - Paleo Thyroid Solution - Lose Stubborn Excess Weight - Part 1

Elle Russ is a writer, actor and the host of the Primal Blueprint Podcast where she interviews various health experts and best-selling authors. Life wasn’t always easy for Elle, though.

She was a victim doctors not being able to diagnose her hypothyroidism for two years and she also experienced the same condition twice in a span of ten years. It wasn’t until she met Mark Sisson and adopted a paleo lifestyle that she decided to author The Paleo Thyroid Solution, a book dedicated to people who suffer from thyroid issues and have found expensive doctor appointments to be a waste of time and money.

In part 1 of our interview, Elle tells us her experience as a hypothyroid patient, her difficulties in finding expert advice and why she thinks the medical practitioner model is broken.

“Endocrinologists are classically the worst doctors on earth to go to for a thyroid problem.” Elle Russ

    In this episode, you’ll learn:

    • Elle struggled with not just her thyroid condition but also in trying to look for expert advice with over 50 doctors. She eventually decided to cure herself and wished she had done it sooner.
    • Living a paleo lifestyle saved her life.
    • Statistically 200 million people have thyroid issues. Around 25 million Americans have thyroid issues and 60% of those Americans are undiagnosed.
    • Majority are undiagnosed due to medical practitioners being steeped in using outdated thyroid protocols from 34 years ago. Getting tested incorrectly also keeps people undiagnosed.
    • The thyroid is the master gland of the human body. Thyroid issues often disguise themselves as treatable symptoms such as freezing, unexplained weight gain or loss, and even hair fall. Depression can be an indicator of a thyroid disorder.
    • Women are more likely to experience thyroid problems than men.
    • SARMS or Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators sold online mostly come from sources with questionable quality control processes.

    Key Takeaways:

    • When your thyroid fizzles out, then everything else starts to get low and you feel terrible.
