Publisher's Summary:
Kassandra Black used to get away with things. She was her high school's anonymous vigilante, exposing bullies and predators. But when she's expelled for breaking into another student's car just weeks before graduation, her acceptance to Columbia is revoked. Now her future depends on behaving herself for the summer at Henley University under the watchful eye of her great-uncle Brian. If she successfully assists him in his HEAR program (Henley Engineering Anomalies Research), and if he puts in a good word for her, she can at least go to college somewhere.
As Kass gets to know the four other HEAR students, she realizes that she overlooked the "Anomalies" part of their acronym. They've all been recruited to help Brian run experiments that gauge extrasensory perception - including, to her astonishment, Kass herself. But Kass would know if she were psychic...right?
Members Reviews:
Badass vigilante lead, pacey, twisted plot from ESP love to CIA vice.
Kass is a totally badass lead, with an endearing vigilante lock-picking past. Throw in some newly discovered ESP, plenty of humor and cynicism and you've got a girl we all want to hang out with.
When the author, Epstein, stumbled on the story of reputable universities funding research into ESP (in the real world), she saw the setting for a great young adult novel; she was right. A team of gifted teens are brought together by an enigmatic professor to explore their powers of prediction, but encounter other forces well beyond their control.
I shouldn't give too much away - just read it! I loved it, and would highly recommend whether or not you're a 'young adult' (I'm not). Looking forward to the next one!
Kassandra is a high school teen like most of us - she's brash
From the protagonist, Kassandra Black, to the fascinating plot that kept me turning the pages, HEAR is a must read. Kassandra is a high school teen like most of us - she's brash, she's sensitive, she's eager, and confused. She's a character that I not only identified with but wanted to follow on her escape to figure out if she has E.S.P. - a topic that Epstein digs into in a convincing and fascinating way. This is a terrific read for anyone of any age who is looking for a delightful story that not only entertains but takes you on a journey as well. You'll feel like your in the lab with Kassandra and her cohorts and become fascinated about the world of the sixth sense as well.

What a fast, exciting, and thoughtful read! I'm not surprised, though. As with her wonderful book God Is in the Pancakes (God Is in the Pancakes) Robin Epstein handles her story and characters with respect and maturity.
An expert balance of humor and realistically-scary plot distinguishes H.E.A.R. from the ever-growing stable of supernatural YA novels while her witty voice makes H.E.A.R. a joy to readers of any age. I expected a lot of teen romance but what I didn't expect was how cleverly she subverts and infuses her romantic elements so that they aid the story instead of bogging it down. She takes a lot of risks to make her sci-fi mystery as realistic as possible but she certainly pulls it off. H.E.A.R. hooks you fast and jostles you hard with each twist. I read a lot of detective thrillers and if I was compelled to keep turning the page, you will be too.
