An excellent fantasy adventure; original, epic and with a kick-ass female protagonist

The story of A Shiver of Snow and Sky takes place on a fairy tale like island called Skane where the Goddess in the sky "speaks" to the islanders through lights in the sky; green means all is fine, blue means a snow storm is afoot, and red... red means danger. 17 years ago, when protagonist Ósa was born, the sky turned red followed by a plague that killed hundreds of people - including Ósa's mother.

Growing up with a father and sister that begrudge her her life, blaming Ósa for her mother's death as â according to them â the pregnancy weakened her, when the skies turn red again Ósa feels it is her mission to face the dangers in the mountain and seek out the Goddess to ask her for help to save her people and earn forgiveness from her family once and for all.

Ósa's journey through other villages, snow fields and finally the treacherous mountains is an incredible adventure, one that reminded me of fantasy epics like The Lord of the Rings, but condensed down into a much more bite-sized novel that was a lot easier to digest than the more intimidating fantasy books out there (I'm looking at you Game of Thrones). And despite plenty of action, it also felt a lot more family-friendly, which is how I prefer my books.

It did take me a little while to warm up to Ósa (ha, see what I did there with the snow-pun?) but once I was able to crack through the protective shell she'd surrounded herself with I really started caring for her and her journey, and was rooting for her to succeed despite the seeming impossibility of the task at hand.

Ósa's brazen hardness was balanced well by the kind and loyal character of Ivar, her friend and one of the few people who believes in her at the start of her mission. In fact, I loved his parts of the novel so much that I wouldn't object to seeing more through his eyes (deleted scenes or a sequel from a different POV perhaps? Are you listening, Lisa? ).

With an ethereal quality to the world its set in, A Shiver of Snow and Sky was an excellent fantasy adventure for young adults and adults alike. It was original, epic and with a kick-ass female protagonist at its heart. And combined with its beautifully descriptive written and a highly original fantasy setting, I'm most definitely hooked.

a lifelong favorite of mine

I fell deep into this story quickly and could not put it down. Being that it was published as a childrenâs book, I was a little worried that the storyline would be a bit too young for me to really appreciate, similarly to how I had a hard time truly appreciating A Wrinkle in Time earlier this year, but this was not the case. The world-building and history of Skane were well thought out, the pace was just right, and the fantasy aspect brought the kind of unease and anticipation that made you afraid of what Ósa might stumble upon when you turned the page.

This is the second in the series and continues Squid and Lynn's journey. I enjoyed the story and the narrator did a great job. There is plenty of action and lots of new characters. It held my interest throughout. yuck to the cliffhanger! I want to know what happens next, I guess that is the point of a cliffhanger. I voluntarily reviewed this audio book after receiving an advanced copy.

"I have been changed for good"

After the previous book, this was like the rainbow after the storm. I was shocked and then rooting for Hamilton till the very end. I was so sad entering the book (SPOILERS- sorry- if you read the last book you KNOW WHY) but went into it knowing "the series can't just end like that." I was right! It's delightfully surprising as it reveals "who they are" and "what about those guys" along the way. There's a lot of AH HA moments- blowing your mind. It showed a so much more "grown up" version of Hamilton as he shows his protective side as well as his forgiving side. I enjoyed the answering of SO MANY QUESTIONS.

(SPOILER) The climax reminded me of a bit of those action thriller rooftop scenes- face off between protagonist and the REAL villain. Quite the page turner. It was a big reveal after big reveal- like finding treasure after treasure.

Makes me feel like I have become friends with HAMILTON himself- that I've been honored to go along on his journey and I am better for it.

A beautiful end to a great series!

Even 7 years later life from Hamilton has many little surprises. I loved this series from beginning to end.

Trust me you will want to read the whole series!

Start to Finish

I enjoyed this series: the mix of longing, fulfillment, mystery, and perfect imperfections as the story line and characters grow. Everlasting brings it all together without ending it all. Start to finish, I recommend this book as well as the entire series. Enjoy1

Great Ending

This book is a fantastic conclusion to a great series. The ending is very emotional (you might need your tissues for this one.) Can't wait to see what else C.S. Johnson does in the future!

Fantastic finale

So, so sad that this is the end of the series, but really glad to have read them all!! Hope to read more like this from CS Johnson.

Elfblood, A Review

This was an interesting story told in a realistic manner. The author created a believable world, not much unlike our own, except for elves, and a few other creatures.

The plot was good, the story so absorbing I don't even know if there were typos, and the characters were well developed. I stayed up late to read it in one go and was sorry when it ended.

Kyra Dune is a very good writer. I look forward to more of her work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this first book in Ms Dune's series. While I'm not usually into harsh warfare, I have to say it was well done. I sympathized with Charlie while he agonized over the decisions he had to make about killing. The rest of the characters were well developed, and I enjoyed each of their stories within the story. Good job, Kyra Dune!

A poetic performance

Wow. Who knew you could feel SO much in such a quick listen! The words were so vivid that I felt like I could see the story unfold before my eyes. The performance of this short story by Dillon Chase only made his words even more poetic and impactful. This had all the feels, and I can't possibly recommend it more highly!

Amazing! So much more insight for the album!

I thought Dillon narrated this perfectly. I was able to easily see the pictures he was painting with his words, and after having listened to the Drifting album for a little while now, Im so glad to have this story as reference. I would have read it sooner, but cant read stories in print, and didnt know it was on Audible, too. The level of depth this gives to an already miracle-inducing album is extraordinary! Trust me, you dont want to miss this story OR the album!

Fabulous book

We purchased this book for a 12 hour car ride. Extremely entertaining!!! Made the ride speed by. Would recommend this for kids and adults alike. Kept everyone interested and hustling back to the car to listen. Will definitely look forward to the next book.

This is a scary tale of Jackie's unfortunate encounter with an emo-werewolf pack that is a bit more real than she had imagined!

Jackie couldn't help but feel a bit envious and somewhat irritated when Francis Masterson's became "semi-famous" after his YouTube video went viral. It all began when Callie Murdock was talking to a reporter about the kids who'd "been stealing her chickens." The weird thing was that some of them weren't even taken home to be Kentucky fried, they were just plain old dead. After Callie exclaimed, "I know who it is too. Those ... wolf kids!," Francis made his famous smart aleck remark that made YouTube history. It was the in thing for some Bridgewater High kids to be emo-werewolves, but seriously, were they all emo or were some of them real? Their self-expression seemed to be getting out of hand.

Principal Weston had no issue with anyone wearing their werewolf getup to school so long as they did their work. Things weren't as innocent as they appeared when the first "Big Incident" happened. The cops were there with their yellow caution tape encircling an emo-wolf car. Everyone knew that someone on the lacrosse team trashed it and there would be trouble. Connor Tailors was not kidding when he told Gwen, "They'll regret this. We'll make them."
