Is technology making life easier… or making us more distracted, anxious and obsessed with being perfect?
This week on the Hear Me Out Podcast, the lads are back around the table for another episode of pub chat, football rage, controversial Hear Me Outs and a conversation that gets a lot deeper than expected.
We start with the World Cup — and one opinion that nearly derails the entire podcast:
⚽ Is Harry Kane massively overrated?
Was Kane the problem? Was it bad management? Should Ollie Watkins have replaced him? And why do England keep sitting back when they're actually playing well?
Then we move into the week's wins and fails — including an incredible development in cancer treatment through the NHS, a preschool graduation, plans for a drunken trip to TOCA Social, another mouse brought into the house by the cat and possibly the worst Snapchat you could receive from a mate.
Then it's time for the Hear Me Outs…
🇬🇧 Is the UK a great place to be poor but a terrible place to be rich?
We debate benefits, taxation, government spending and whether people who contribute more increasingly feel punished for doing so.
💧 Are the water companies mugging us all off?
If huge amounts of treated water are being lost through leaks, why are households the ones being told to save water during hosepipe bans?
📱 Has technology made our attention spans worse?
Notifications. TikTok. Short-form videos. Social media. Instant answers.
When we're surrounded by technology constantly, is it any surprise our brains struggle to switch off?
And that leads into one of the biggest conversations of the episode:
Has having access to the answer to EVERYTHING made us obsessed with perfection?
Your finances.
Your diet.
Your sleep.
Your parenting.
Your fitness.
Your productivity.
You can open your phone perfectly happy with your life and, within two minutes, somebody online can convince you you're doing everything wrong.
Maybe the problem isn't that we don't know enough anymore.
Maybe we know too much.
Because when everyone online appears richer, fitter, more productive and a better parent than you…
When do you stop improving your life and actually start living it?
🧠 We also discuss the danger of knowing 10% of a subject and thinking you know 100%, why Google has changed the way we debate and whether our fear of making mistakes is actually stopping us from learning.
🏉 Could football learn something from rugby?
TMO vs VAR, sin bins, respect for referees and whether football needs to completely rethink how games are managed.
🌕 And somebody genuinely asks us to consider whether the moon could be an artificial spacecraft.
It goes about as well as you'd expect.
Then we get deep.
👨👧👦 What ONE trait do you hope your kids inherit from you — and ONE you hope they don't?
Family. Loyalty. Determination. Standing by your word.
But also anger, isolation, poor judgement and not talking soon enough when something is wrong.
That leads into a bigger conversation about gratitude and parenting.
📱 Have screens stolen some of our kids' imagination?
When we were kids, we'd find a football, climb a tree, knock on a mate's door or simply invent something to do.
Now children have almost unlimited entertainment in their hands.
Are we giving our kids so much that it's becoming harder for them to appreciate what they have?
And are parents becoming so frightened of getting parenting "wrong" that we're forgetting something important?
Sometimes you've just got to let kids be kids.
Finally:
❤️ If you could relive ONE day of your life, what would it be?
The birth of your children? Your wedding? A huge achievement? An unforgettable holiday?
Or Gabby Agbonlahor scoring against Birmingham City on your 21st birthday…
