  • Another Omnibus Bill, China Hacking States, Russian Oil, Science & Space w/guest Dr Michael Siegel

Heard Tell for Wednesday, March 9nd, 2022 is turning down the noise and getting to the information we need on congress once again slapdashing an omnibus bill through under the auspices of deadline legislation. This time, it is a $1.5 trillion dollar funding measure to keep the government running through the end of the fiscal year…plus all the things that we will find out last minute and after the fact that will be snuck in. Also, continuing to talk about Putin’s war of aggression in Ukraine and President Biden’s announcement that the United States will start to sanction & block oil imports from Russia, and also highlight the absurd visual of Ukrainian gas workers risking their lives to keep the pipelines through Ukraine that moves gas from Russia to Europe running in the first 10 days of the war and those exports increased. Of course, with that comes the blame game of rising fuel prices at the American pump, so we will turn down the noise on what is and isn’t the president’s fault when it comes to rising fuel costs. Guest Dr. Michael Siegel returns to Heard Tell to talk some science both in the stars and universe and also with COVID-19 back here on Earth. How science should work, what lessons have been learned, and how we should appreciate that yesterday’s scientific breakthrough is tomorrow's norm. Also, Michael explains the bad astronomy in Interview With A Vampire, a real-life Armageddon-style mission to crash into an asteroid, and how the Russia-Ukraine war threatens cooperation in space. Meanwhile, China has once again been caught using cyber attacks and hacks, this time exploiting vulnerabilities in state governments and even animal regulatory agencies. We also cover the story of a student who turned the tragic death of a classmate into a gift that will serve and protect their community for many years to come. • Culture Wars v Real War, Beware Russian Offers, Hispanic Voters, "Fund the Police" w/Joshua Crawford

Heard Tell for Tuesday, March 8nd, 2022 is turning down the noise and getting to the information we need on how those that obsess over and have their primary filters of view the world over American culture war issues find their reality challenged by the real life shooting war in Ukraine. We talk about how Patriarch Kirill of the Russian Orthodox Church is using the language of the culture wars to justify and stooge for Vladimir Putin and his war of aggression against Ukraine. Also, on a topic Heard Tell has been talking about lately, more news stories about Hispanic and Latino voters, and how the "demographics is destiny" campaign pitches are not living up to the reality of living, breathing voters. Guest Joshua Crawford, an attorney, Young Voices contributor, and head of the Pelican Institute of Louisville, Kentucky joins to talk about President Biden's emphasis on "fund the police" from the State of The Union, how that pushes against the "defund the police" narrative of some in his own party, and the optics and strategy behind this emphasis. Joshua talks about the facts and stats beyond the headlines and commentary about rising crime to turn down the noise and get to which kinds of crime are increasing, why they are, and what we should do about it. Joshua also talks about how funding alone isn't the answer to public safety questions, and how policing policy, community involvement, accountability, and targeted funding and support are all necessary to fulfill government's role as provider of public safety. Plus, we continue to discuss how "humanitarian corridors" are as much a part of the Russian war plan in Ukraine as tanks and bombs are, and how we know this because of how Putin's forces have used such things in recent history. We also have the amazing, uplifting story of a man in Ireland who rallied his community to give to Ukraine, and took extraordinary measures to make sure their aid got exactly where they intended it too. • The Ukraine Crisis Brings Clarity, Truth Social's Failure To Launch, Culture & Politics w/ Tod Kelly

Heard Tell for Monday, March 7nd, 2022 is turning down the noise and getting to the information we need on how the crisis in Ukraine, Russia's war of aggression, and events surrounding open war in Europe ought to be bringing clarity to how we view the world, our politics, and our debates over culture. We talk about how the bravery of the Ukrainian people, the evil actions of Vladimir Putin, and the extraordinary leadership of the Ukrainian government throws our own issues, politics, and leadership into stark relief that demands we reconsider what we are doing as a people. We once again check on Donald Trump's Truth Social platform and find their failure to launch to be pretty much what we predicted both on the technical side, and in the problems and law of diminishing returns of focusing on a narrow audience. Guest Tod Kelly, a long time long form journalists, joins Heard Tell to talk about the domestic reaction to the War in Ukraine, how some folks suddenly changed when faced with Putin's invasion, and how others stayed exactly the same. We talk about the role of media in Ukraine, but also how the nationalization of media makes things like the State of the Union lesser since we focus on the president 24/7 in the news cycle. Also, Tod talks about being hopeful in the response we are seeing to Ukraine, being not surprised that the Marjorie Taylor Greenes of the world find and audience, and answers some tough questions about media and where we go from here as a people. Also, we update the story we covered on the burn pits and veterans as legislation is approved in the House and now has to be reconciled with a Senate measure, plus the story of how a Russian and Ukrainian chefs who have been long time friends are using food to try to raise awareness and money while reminding folks that the long time geographical neighbors are also long time friends when wicked dictators aren't involved.
