  • HIV/AIDS Comparisons to Covid-19, The Dennis Prager Comments, & Surviving with Hope w/David Hubbell

So you might have Heard Tell that some recent comments by Dennis Prager stating that “During the AIDS crisis, can you imagine if gay men and intravenous drug users, who were the vast majority of the people with AIDS, had they been pariahs the way the non-vaccinated are? But it would have been inconceivable. And it should have been inconceivable; they should not have been made pariahs. But this is kosher, this is OK.” This created a strong reaction on social media and elsewhere. But instead of just reacting, we wanted to turn down the noise on this and talk to someone who lived through the AIDS crisis and can speak from personal experience and give their perspective on then and now. David Hubbell was first diagnosed with HIV in 1985, and he tells the story of finding out via letter, the early days of the crisis, drug trials, surviving the "unsurvivable", and what does and does not compare. Talking about health crisis then and now with a focus not on statistics or cultural issues but on the people involved, on this episode of Heard Tell.

You probably Heard Tell that Virginia not only had an election recently, but that election means that [insert prior political position here] is vindicated...or, at least that seems to be how a bunch of folks are approaching it. Instead of doing that, we are going to turn down the noise on the Virginia elections and turn to our friends at Elections Daily, and their Deputy Director for their Elections Team Joe Szymanski, who is very familiar with Virginia and covered the race from primaries to after parties. Why did Glenn Youngkin surprise so many and beat the electoral odds, why did Terry McAuliffe falter and fail, what was the keys to the race, who were the important people groups, and what should we take from this election going into 2022 midterms. Information over affirmation, and data over feelz, on this episode of Heard Tell.

  • Social Media, Access Journalism, and Culture & Politics in Sports

So you probably Heard Tell that fall is full-bore sports season with all four of the major sports in America going at the same time, which means once again cultural issues and political discussions find their way into, onto, and involved in the sports world. Recent scandals in the NFL with John Gruden's emails once again riled up long-running issues of race and abusive language and behavior in the power structures of America's most popular sport. In the NBA, Kyrie Irving has found himself the avatar of the Covid-19 vaccine mandate. So let's turn down the news cycle noise about these issues in sports with sports writer and broadcaster Josh Buckhalter. We talk about how things like social media, access journalism, and the current news media environment affect not only our consumption of information but the business model of teams, outlets, and journalists. Also, how the expansion of legalized gambling has changed not only how folks consumer sports but who is consuming them. Plus, Josh points out that there never really has been a divide between sports and culture & politics. All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell with Josh Buckhalter.
