“When it comes down to self love and self compassion, you have to keep coming back to forgiveness, and empathy and love and say you know what, you’re doing a good job; remember how far you’ve come.”  

Happy Friday, friends. This came a week later but I promise you, you don’t want to miss it! I have the pleasure of connecting with Jona through our common pursuit and passion for podcasting and connecting with people and I couldn’t be more grateful and honored for this conversation, one that I needed to hear myself, one that wrapped me up in warmth because I could relate, one the encouraged and inspired me to grow, to stay determined but also, be gentle with yourself on days when you aren’t okay and miss home just a little more.

1. Life can be full of curveballs but if you begin looking for the silver linings and stay committed to your goals, opportunities will present itself

“They say when we’re feeling nervous or fearful, often time, the flip side of that is excitement, excitement of the new possibilities we’re expanding into and I definitely say, tap into that source of energy that’s inside you; you have it in you.” 

What a delightful and encouraging conversation this was, one that was so relatable and one that left me feeling like I could give myself the permission and courage to not give up on pursuing and chasing my heart’s desires despite the pressures stemming from our culture conditioning, norms and stereotypes. I love how young yet how in touch she is with her thoughts and feelings and how she was able to channel that into passion to help others just like her.

Akin to the conversation we had, Juliana is nothing short of a bright, invigorating spark of a human being that I am beyond grateful I got to cross paths with and now call a friend, ally, and cheerleader on this journey of being female and migrants to the country we live in. 

Originally from Brazil, Juliana has spent the past 5 years living in 2 vastly different countries, relocating as a result of her husband’s career. In addition to navigating huge transitions moving across countries, she also navigated through marriage and having a baby in the midst of it. Having walked through the path of feeling lost and alone herself, she has now acquired the mindset and skills to live out her purpose and create her own success story in her new country and she is ready and passionate to help you find and create yours.

Here are the takeaways:

1. It’s not the environment that create the life that you want; it’s what you decide you want and then use the environment around me as tools to create this life  
2. Americans are like a peach; sweet on the outside, hard in the inside whereas Europeans are like coconut, hard on the outside and soft and sweet on the inside 
3. Often times, it’s less about you; don’t lay the entire weight of adapting to a new country, culture or society on yourself; be patient 
4. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed when undergoing major changes in your life 
5. Consider talking and getting support from a therapist or mentors to walk with you through this process 
6. Connect with communities that are available; local, international, those from the similar countries/culture/language 
7. Be open to connect with others; start small 
8. In current times where the pandemic is still a real thing, consider checking out Facebook groups to connect with like-minded individuals  
9. For women living abroad, this idea of ‘distancing’ is not foreign; we already have the skills to maintain connection with people who are physically afar 
10. You are resourceful; often times, you already know the answers 
11. Be present; each moment is an opportunity to learn a new lesson 
12. There is power in the now 
13. Don’t be afraid to create the connections you want 
14. We attach our value to the things we are or the work we do but the real work is about finding your purpose and reconnecting to your values 
15. Be willing to let go in order to create the person you really are

“I’d say you are an individual. Someone else could be doing the same thing as you are but you are you, no one else can have your perspective, so just being able to be you and bring your perspective to your brand and product, that’s how it’s going to make you stand out and then market your brand towards that.” 

I has so much fun chatting with Van! Honest, down to earth, pure, real, are but some of the words that came to my mind to describe this heartfelt conversation with Julianna. Our connection was one that, if not for the both us being open to welcome new connections into our lives by saying yes and being willing to shed our shields, ditch the small talk and connect with hearts open, it would not have had the opportunity to be sowed, much less the opportunity for others out there who needed help going through their own hard seasons that you’re not alone in feeling resistance asking for help or battling mental health issues, and to hear that your story is as needed as the story of the person next to you.

Here are the takeaways:

1. Being aware is the first step towards the path of healing 
2. Binge-Eating disorder is another kind of eating disorder that is less known that the types we are more aware of; be mindful to not judge or negate the seriousness that can be involved with just what we are typically exposed to 
3. An easy “out” when dealing with problems is often to negate it 
4. The willingness to have hard conversations with loved ones can be necessary sometimes to heal from difficult situations and childhood wounds 
5. There’s so much to be said about being heard and understood that is critical to healing 
6. Be curious instead of being judgmental and you’ll see meaningful and nourishing connections develop 
7. The world is getting more saturated yet it’s more lonely than ever  
8. Listen to your own truth and ask yourself “What do I really need?” 
9. The real only constant is yourself. Focus on you. Choose to go for what makes you proud. 
10. Work on filling your own cup and you will see how that will create positive ripples in the way you relate to others around you

Happy Friday, friends! Welcome back to another episode and being here with me. You’re in for a special one today! I have the honor to engage in a connected, uplifting conversation with Jas who is an expat currently living and working in Germany. Hearty and wholesome are ways I find myself using to describe this conversation, as we jived about this shared yet unique experience of uprooting our lives and moving abroad to countries very different from the one we were brought up in, as we shared stories of interesting occurrences and also exchange tips and advice on some steps we can take to better integrate and find joy in our new lives in new cities. 1. The detachment and feeling that you’re stuck in an in-between zone between where you grew up in and the country you’re living in now is real and it’s okay to acknowledge it, feel it and process it

5. Find as many opportunities to connect with as many people as you can; a good tip: start by finding people who shares the same hobbies, interest

7. Bake a cake on your first day to the office and create/initiate those conversations 
8. Take this as an opportunity to start over; a clean slate and to be unabashedly you without the lenses and pressures from your family, friends back home
9. Start unbecoming to become who you really are 
10. Sometimes, it’s more the fear of asking others to step out of their comfort zone by being around you than it is about you not being likeable or you having an issue 
11. Show respect and enthusiasm by attempting to learn more about language, culture and habits; you will be appreciated for trying 
12. The relationship with your parents who loves her can feel stressful and charged at times, but never forget that their intent is always that you’re happy and in a safe place
