Wendell Berry was a brilliant writer, poet, farmer, teacher. He was also a kind man who was fierce and courageous about what he loved. He loved family, community, farming and the whole web of life. Berry was not a saint, but better than a saint. He was a living breathing human who never placed himself above others. He walked shoulder to shoulder with all of us who love beautiful, artful words and Mother Earth.

However, psychologically, these boundaries aren’t always as clear-cut as they seem. The person who intimidates others may also be intimidated by them. The individual who bullies often experiences the most humiliation. And yes, the person who is overly controlling may feel helpless. Of course, understanding someone’s behavior doesn’t mean condoning it, but it does provide a more powerful and less reactive stance to take.
