Wendell Berry was a brilliant writer, poet, farmer, teacher. He was also a kind man who was fierce and courageous about what he loved. He loved family, community, farming and the whole web of life. Berry was not a saint, but better than a saint. He was a living breathing human who never placed himself above others. He walked shoulder to shoulder with all of us who love beautiful, artful words and Mother Earth.

We’re adept at identifying and distinguishing between good and bad people. This distinction is crucial for maintaining healthy boundaries between ourselves and others. However, psychologically, these boundaries aren’t always as clear-cut as they seem. The person who intimidates others may also be intimidated by them. The individual who bullies often experiences the most humiliation. And yes, the person who is overly controlling may feel helpless. Of course, understanding someone’s behavior doesn’t mean condoning it, but it does provide a more powerful and less reactive stance to take.

I think we need more creativity in every aspect of our lives—as individuals, community members, workers, and especially as Earthlings. Among the qualities that creativity demands, an appetite for uncertainty is high on that list. Moreover, it is true that creativity is the key to our freedom.

Dr. Abdul El-Sayed’s prospects of securing victory in the upcoming Senate Primary seem promising, despite the seemingly insurmountable odds stacked against him. His relatively new political status and the opposition from corporate-backed politicians of both parties who oppose his stance on universal healthcare present significant challenges. Dr. El-Sayed’s stance advocates for supporting average working people and keeping money within the country to fund programs that benefit US citizens.

The political slogan “other people’s money” has persisted because it taps into our innate sense of fairness. However, it falters when it assumes that wealth is created independently of the society that facilitates, produces, and protects it.

Of course, prosperity is individually earned, but it is also collectively enabled. Moreover, we haven’t even touched on how wealth concentration tends to “rig the game” economically and politically, resulting in an increasing burden on average people while fewer societal benefits accrue to them.

In this context, let’s embark on a new conversation about fairness. This week’s poem is dedicated to an emerging politician, Abdul El-Sayed, who is leading this new conversation on fairness with remarkable skill.
