Heaven

Listen Later

Somewhere beyond the skies, they say

Lies what is the permanent Heaven,

The Tavern beyond the shining stars

And, not the one that opens nightly at Seven.

This opens up possibilities, though

And choices are always nice,

The Heaven we imagine and the one we know

One free, the other tagged with a price.

I know there is confusion there, friends

For the obvious “Heaven” is only one,

Which demands piety and “goodness”, the price

While the other is just great revelry and fun.

Jousting, jostling, all innocent fun

Elbows raised and all well done,

No malice in a drunken heart

That loves the Moon and hates the Sun.

Mortals are mortals everywhere

And, I guess the same in Paradise

Angels, midst us, mortal, folks

Must be a place full of guile and lies.

Not running down this Planet, friends

Just warning those with “heavenly” intent,

Don’t miss the bliss of a goodnight’s kiss

For, the angelic Heaven and its pure content.

Now, if this got within earshot of the Lord

My chances ruined, my hopes dashed and hit,

Dark are my nights and tipsy too

And, the streets I walk rather dimly lit.

Goodbye then to “heavenly” aspirations

A “whiskied” breath is worth heaven and more,

Hand in hand with someone “heavenly”

Heaven, truly, lies on that sandy shore.

I shall rise to the challenge that Angels pose

And, do so on terms my very own,

The Lord knows me well, I’m duly blessed

Thankful always, I seldom moan.
