Since we are working in the Body, we should not serve in an individualistic isolated way, but are supported by & through the Body. We also need to realize that our real service is by prayer. The apostles/disciples had nothing back then to serve with except for prayer. Prayer is the trigger-point that causes all the other outward activities to be effectual. Although we have the Spirit, the Word, and the Body as the main factors of our service, our prayer is the “activator”. In this new year, may we have a renewed consecration to build up our prayer life, to cultivate “upper-room prayer”! To persevere to train our spiritual muscles to increase our capacity for prayer.

Within every serving one's life, a personal and private prayer life is most essential. The top example of this is displayed in the service of our Lord. Throughout His busy ministry, He regularly withdrew from the crowds, even the disciples, to pray to the Father in secret (Matt. 14:23). Today, we must exercise to have uninterrupted times with Him to know His will in detail and be refreshed in our commission. May we learn to pray, even for days (Luke 6:12), to gain an ever-deepening relationship with Him that results in the precious mingling for the kingdom.

The object of our seeking and our pursuit is none other than God Himself. There comes a time when our serving outwardly may still be there but the inward seeking and pursuit has already stopped or paused. As full-timers have a seeking heart and a pursuing spirit, not the same as years ago but much more than ever. With this there will be a revival, there will be a renewal in our lives, in our service, even in the church life.

The key to serving the Lord is maintaining a good conscience. Without a good conscience, our faith leaks out, and a conscience full of offense invites the enemy’s accusations. Therefore, we need Christ as the breastplate of righteousness to protect our conscience. 1 Timothy 1:5 speaks of  a pure heart, a good conscience, and unfeigned faith. A good conscience and unfeigned faith go together, and such faith purifies the heart. Hence, serving the Lord is a matter of our person being right. Moreover, 1 Timothy 3:9 reveals that we hold on to the mystery of the faith by having a pure conscience; such a person is able transmit life into others. On the contrary, 1 Timothy 4:2 talks about men who are branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron. This is a conscience which has lost feeling, and it is a very dangerous place to be in. As we are serving we have to deal with and maintain a good conscience so that we can be a person full of faith in the Lord. And it is by this that we can serve Him and minister to His people.

As His serving ones today, we must cooperate with the seasons to grow. Because life is brief and our time and strength is limited, we must grasp the opportunity to number our days and gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:12). Furthermore, the real meaning of “full-time” goes beyond the mere name or outward schedule; rather, it is a person who lives Christ. They bear the three characteristics unveiled by Paul in Romans 12: presented, consecrated bodies (v. 1), renewed minds in the process of transformation (v. 2), and burning spirits (v. 11). Lastly, the four coordinates or pillars which we must always check ourselves to know where we are is life, truth, the church, and the gospel.
