  • AARON BEAM of RED FANG Talks 'Deep Cuts' And 20 Years Of Heavy Music On The Loaded Radio Podcast
Aaron Beam discusses Red Fang's new collection and two decades of riff-driven sludge metal, plus Justin Benlolo of BRKN Love joins the show TL;DR

This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast, Aaron Beam from Red Fang joins us to celebrate the band's 20th anniversary and discuss the release of their latest collection, Deep Cuts. Beam dives into the band's beginnings, the process of assembling rare tracks, and the inspiration behind Red Fang's unrelenting sound. Later in the episode, Justin Benlolo of BRKN Love drops in to talk about the band's ongoing evolution and the exciting plans ahead.

Red Fang reflect on two decades of sludge-soaked greatness

Formed in 2005 in Portland, Oregon, Red Fang carved out a distinct place in the modern heavy scene with their gritty, hook-laden sludge metal. Over the last 20 years, they've delivered one crushing release after another, gaining a reputation for both their anthemic riffs and their offbeat sense of humor.

Now, Aaron Beam and the rest of Red Fang mark their 20th year with Deep Cuts — a sprawling 26-track release packed with non-album tracks, covers, demos, and hidden gems. It's a celebration of the band's journey so far, offering longtime fans a treasure trove of rarely heard material that still captures the raw, unfiltered energy Red Fang are known for.

On the latest episode of the Loaded Radio Podcast, Beam opens up about the creation of Deep Cuts, shares reflections on the early days of jamming in drummer John Sherman's basement, and talks about what it feels like to still be making music together two decades later.

Deep Cuts offers a full throttle dive into Red Fang's evolution

From the thunderous opening riff of "Antidote" to the atmospheric shifts of tracks like "Hollow Light" and "Endless Sea," Deep Cuts showcases the full range of Red Fang's capabilities. Beam notes that the collection captures the oddities, covers, and experimental moments that have fueled the band's evolution over the years.

Highlights include their gritty renditions of Wipers' "Over the Edge" and Dust's "Suicide," as well as fan-favorite deep cuts like "Stereo Nucleosis" and "Black Water." It's a wild ride through the different textures and tones that have shaped Red Fang's career — from straight-up sludge anthems to more experimental, synth-laced jams.

Beam also reflects on how his own musical journey — and the shared history with bandmates Bryan Giles, David Sullivan, and John Sherman — continues to push Red Fang's sound forward even after 20 years.

Justin Benlolo of BRKN Love joins the conversation

The second half of this week's podcast features Justin Benlolo, the dynamic frontman of BRKN Love. Benlolo and Loaded Radio's Scott Penfold dig into the band's unique blend of hard rock and alternative influences, their songwriting process, and their ambitions as they continue building momentum within the modern rock landscape.

With new music and major tour plans on the horizon, BRKN Love are positioning themselves as one of the exciting young acts keeping heavy music alive in a constantly evolving scene.

The return of Haynes brings back Allegaeon's brutal and technically dazzling sound, which fans have been eagerly awaiting. The band's latest single, "Driftwood," serves as a powerful introduction to the new record, with its unique blend of melodic, technical death metal — a sound Haynes describes as "melotech."

"We're just so happy to finally release new music," said Greg Burgess. "We're working on a full album's worth of material, but I feel like it's gonna drop kind of in chunks and then hopefully the rest of it all at once kind of thing."

Recording once again with producer Dave Otero at Flatline Audio studio in Denver, Allegaeon continues their 17-year relationship with the producer. "Dave always provides a comfortable working environment, amazing ideas, and a career-spanning understanding of what has made Allegaeon, Allegaeon," added Burgess.

The album's overarching theme focuses on various perspectives of death, with each track exploring a unique viewpoint. Haynes explained, "Each song essentially is a different topic, however there is always a different perspective of death tied to each subject."

  • JETHRO TULL's IAN ANDERSON Talks 'Curious Ruminant,' Musical Evolution, And That Infamous Grammy Win Over METALLICA On The Loaded Radio Podcast

an Anderson Talks New Jethro Tull Album Curious Ruminant And Band's Legacy On The Loaded Radio Podcast

    TL;DR

Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson joins The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss the band's latest album Curious Ruminant, which arrived on March 7, 2025. Anderson shares insights into the songwriting process, the return of former keyboardist Andrew Giddings, and how the band's sound continues to evolve. He also reflects on Jethro Tull's historic Grammy win over Metallica, their legacy in progressive rock, and more. Listen to the full episode at the bottom of this article or wherever you get your podcasts.

Ian Anderson Discusses Curious Ruminant And Jethro Tull's Everlasting Influence

Few bands in rock history have maintained the creative energy and musical sophistication of Jethro Tull. With a career spanning over five decades, the British progressive rock icons are set to return with their latest studio album, Curious Ruminant. This marks their third album in just four years, following the success of The Zealot Gene (2022) and RökFlöte (2023).

Ian Anderson, the band's founder, flutist, and frontman, joined The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss the new record, the creative process behind it, and Tull's enduring legacy in the world of progressive and folk rock.

Curious Ruminant: A Deep Dive Into The New Album

The album consists of nine tracks, ranging from short two-and-a-half-minute compositions to a near seventeen-minute epic. The LP features a mix of full-band performances and intricate acoustic arrangements, staying true to Tull's signature blend of progressive rock, folk, and classical influences.

Notably, the album sees the return of former keyboardist Andrew Giddings, alongside longtime members David Goodier (bass), John O'Hara (piano, keyboards, accordion), and Scott Hammond (drums). Newcomer Jack Clark makes his Jethro Tull recording debut on electric guitar, while James Duncan (drums, cajón, percussion) also contributes to the recording.

Anderson revealed that some of the compositions stem from unfinished instrumental demos recorded years ago, yet they blend seamlessly with the newly crafted material. The album's sonic palette includes not only his signature flute solos and melodies but also accordion, mandolin, acoustic and tenor guitars, evoking the spirit of Jethro Tull's 1970s folk-prog era.

Ian Anderson On The Writing Process

The creative process for Curious Ruminant began shortly after the release of RökFlöte in 2023. Anderson started conceptualizing the album in late 2023, with the first musical ideas taking shape by May 2024. By June, lyrics and melodies were flowing effortlessly, creating a natural synergy between the new and previously recorded material.

Unlike many of Tull's past releases, Curious Ruminant features more personal, introspective lyrics. Anderson, known for his sharp observational songwriting, balances his trademark wit with moments of deep self-reflection. However, as he humorously points out, fans shouldn't expect the typical "I-me" lyricism found in mainstream rock and pop.

Jethro Tull's Historic Grammy Win Over Metallica

In addition to discussing the new album, Anderson reflects on one of the most controversial moments in Grammy history—Jethro Tull's victory over Metallica in the Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance category in 1989. At the time, Metallica was widely expected to win for …And Justice for All, but the award instead went to Tull's Crest of a Knave, sparking outrage among metal fans.

While Anderson has addressed the incident numerous times over the years, he still finds humor in the situation. The band didn't even attend the ceremony, assuming they had no chance of winning. However, the moment has since become an infamous chapter in both Jethro Tull's and Metallica's histories.

    An Enduring Legacy

Formed in 1967, Jethro Tull carved a unique path in rock music by incorporating progressive rock, folk, blues, and classical elements into their sound. Led by Anderson's unmistakable flute playing and poetic lyricism, the band has released 23 studio albums, including landmark records like Aqualung (1971), Thick as a Brick (1972), and Songs from the Wood (1977).

Even after decades in the industry, Anderson remains committed to crafting thought-provoking, musically rich compositions. With Curious Ruminant, he continues to push the boundaries of Tull's sound while honoring its rich legacy.

  • WHITECHAPEL's BEN SAVAGE Talks 'Hymns In Dissonance', Crushing Riffs, and Musical Influences – The Loaded Radio Podcast
Whitechapel's Ben Savage On The Loaded Radio Podcast TL;DR

In this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, Whitechapel guitarist Ben Savage discusses the band's highly anticipated new album, Hymns In Dissonance, set for release on March 7 via Metal Blade Records. He dives into the writing process, the band's heaviest breakdowns yet, his biggest influences, and what fans can expect from their upcoming North American tour. Listen to the full interview below!

Whitechapel's Hymns In Dissonance: Their Most Brutal Album Yet?

For over a decade, Whitechapel has been at the forefront of modern deathcore, delivering devastating riffs, punishing breakdowns, and unrelenting aggression. Now, with their ninth studio album, Hymns In Dissonance, the Knoxville-based metal titans are taking their sound to darker and heavier depths than ever before.

According to guitarist Alex Wade, the album is designed to be "shockingly menacing and brutal." With guttural lows, eerie atmospheres, and crushing riffage, Hymns In Dissonance is poised to be one of the heaviest releases of 2024.

In this week's episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, we sit down with Ben Savage to break down the album's concept, the band's unique approach to songwriting, and what went into crafting this monstrous new record.

The Concept Behind Hymns In Dissonance

Unlike their previous album, Kin (2021), which explored deeply personal themes, Hymns In Dissonance is a concept album centered around a cult leader gathering followers to commit heinous acts in worship of their dark lord.

Frontman Phil Bozeman describes the album's title as a direct contradiction:

"Hymns are melodious and harmonious. Dissonance is the opposite. Dissonance represents evil. These tracks serve as hymns for the cult, each one symbolizing a deadly sin."

The record follows a 10-track journey that builds upon Whitechapel's legacy while introducing some of their lowest tunings and most intricate guitar work yet.

    Whitechapel's Heaviest Riffs Yet?

One of the most exciting elements of Hymns In Dissonance is its brutal guitar work. In the interview, Ben Savage breaks down how Whitechapel pushed their sound further than ever before.

One key highlight is the album's title track, which drops to Drop F tuning in its final breakdown—the lowest tuning Whitechapel has ever used. According to Wade, the shift in tuning helps create an "overwhelmingly crushing" finale that fans will undoubtedly feel in their bones.

The album's lead single, "A Visceral Retch," was the first taste of this new sound, immediately receiving high praise from fans for its sheer intensity.

The Making of Hymns In Dissonance

Unlike previous albums, the writing and recording process for Hymns In Dissonance was entirely in-house, with Zach Householder handling production duties. Having worked closely with producer Mark Lewis over the years, Householder was able to bring his deep understanding of Whitechapel's sound into the production process, ensuring maximum impact with every track.

Savage also discusses how the band approached writing in a structured, weekday-only schedule, which allowed them to stay focused while avoiding burnout.

Whitechapel's Hymns In Dissonance North American Tour

With the album set to drop on March 7, Whitechapel is gearing up for a massive North American tour in support of Hymns In Dissonance. The month-long trek kicks off on March 18 in Raleigh, NC, and wraps up on April 19 in Atlanta, GA.

They'll be joined by an absolutely stacked lineup, featuring:

    • Brand of Sacrifice
    • 200 Stab Wounds
    • Alluvial

With this kind of brutal tour package, fans can expect a nonstop assault of heavy music every single night. Tickets are available now, and if Whitechapel's past performances are anything to go by, this is not a show you'll want to miss.

Listen to the Full Interview with Ben Savage

We cover all of this and more in this week's Loaded Radio Podcast, where Ben Savage opens up about his biggest musical influences, his favorite records of all time, and what makes Hymns In Dissonance such a special album for Whitechapel.

  • JOHNNY KELLY Talks TYPE O NEGATIVE, PETER STEELE, And More On The Loaded Radio Podcast

Johnny Kelly From Sun Don't Shine, Quiet Riot, Silvertomb and Type O Negative on the Loaded Radio Podcast

Johnny Kelly has been a staple in the heavy music world for decades. Best known for his tenure as the drummer for Type O Negative, Kelly has kept himself incredibly busy over the years, working with Danzig, Quiet Riot, Kill Devil Hill, and more. On this week's edition of The Loaded Radio Podcast, Johnny joins us to discuss everything from his time in Type O Negative to his thoughts on a potential Peter Steele tribute concert and what it would take to pull off such an event the right way.

🎧 Listen to the full episode at the bottom of this article! 🎧

A Drummer with a Legendary Resume

Johnny Kelly's journey in the world of heavy music began in the early '90s when he took over drumming duties for Type O Negative following the departure of Sal Abruscato. From that point forward, Kelly remained behind the kit as the band rose to global fame with albums like Bloody Kisses (1993), October Rust (1996), and World Coming Down (1999).

With Peter Steele's haunting vocals, gothic aesthetic, and darkly humorous lyricism, Type O Negative carved out a unique and irreplaceable space in the metal world. Their music blended elements of doom metal, gothic rock, and alternative metal, delivering some of the most memorable and genre-defying records of the era.

However, when Peter Steele tragically passed away in 2010, it marked the end of Type O Negative, with the surviving members making it clear that the band could not continue without their charismatic frontman.

But for Johnny, music was never something he could walk away from.

Since Type O Negative's dissolution, Kelly has continued to be an in-demand drummer, performing with Danzig as his longtime touring drummer, stepping into the lineup of Quiet Riot, and working with Kill Devil Hill, Sun Don't Shine and Silvertomb (both of which feature Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Hickey).

Could a Peter Steele Tribute Concert Happen?

One of the biggest questions Type O Negative fans have asked over the years is whether a Peter Steele tribute concert could ever happen.

Would the remaining Type O Negative members reunite to honor their late frontman? Could we see special guests and legendary musicians take the stage to pay tribute to one of the most unique voices in metal?

When asked about the possibility of such an event, Johnny Kelly doesn't rule it out—but makes it clear that it would have to be done right.

"It's something that has come up before in conversations," he admits, noting that a tribute show would have to meet the incredibly high expectations of Type O Negative's dedicated fanbase.

"You can't just throw something together. If it were to happen, it would have to be special. It would have to be something that really honors Peter's legacy the way it deserves to be honored," Kelly explains.

It's a topic that continues to stir excitement and speculation among fans. A Peter Steele tribute concert could potentially bring together friends, collaborators, and musicians influenced by Type O Negative, making for an unforgettable event. But as Johnny suggests, the right people, the right circumstances, and the right timing would be essential to making it a reality.

Life After Type O Negative: Keeping the Spirit Alive

Even without a tribute concert in the works (for now), Johnny Kelly has remained actively involved in the music scene. His work with Danzig has made him a mainstay in the live circuit, while his involvement with Quiet Riot has helped keep the legacy of another iconic band alive.

Meanwhile, Sun Don't Shine continues to produce heavy, groove-laden rock, showcasing Johnny's versatile drumming style in a fresh, modern setting.

In this Loaded Radio Podcast interview, Johnny opens up about what it's been like to navigate the ever-changing music industry, how he balances his various projects, and his perspective on Type O Negative's lasting impact.

  • James LaBrie on Dream Theater's 'Parasomnia,' Portnoy's Return, and What's Next

Dream Theater fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Parasomnia, the progressive metal icons' latest full-length album, and now that it's here, it's proving to be one of their most compelling releases in years. With the return of founding drummer Mike Portnoy and a fresh creative energy flowing through the band, Parasomnia not only marks a reunion but also signals an exciting new chapter in Dream Theater's storied career.

On this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, host Scott Penfold sits down with Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie for an in-depth conversation about the making of Parasomnia, the themes behind its haunting and immersive sound, and what it was like having Portnoy back behind the kit after nearly a decade and a half.

A Return to Familiar Ground with a Fresh Perspective

Parasomnia, which arrived on February 7, 2025, via InsideOut Music, is the band's first release with Portnoy since 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The album, produced by guitarist John Petrucci and mixed by Andy Sneap, explores eerie and unsettling dream states, weaving together complex rhythms, intricate melodies, and soaring vocals.

From the opening moments of In The Arms of Morpheus to the epic closer The Shadow Man Incident, the record is a journey through subconscious fears, sleep paralysis, and the bizarre world of dreams. Tracks like A Broken Man, Dead Asleep, Midnight Messiah, and Bend The Clock further build upon these themes, making for an album that's as cinematic as it is musically intricate. The first single, Night Terror, is a nearly ten-minute thrill ride that perfectly captures the essence of the record's dark undertones.

Mike Portnoy's Return and Mike Mangini's Departure

Of course, one of the biggest talking points surrounding Parasomnia is Mike Portnoy's return. After a 14-year absence, the founding drummer is back, and his chemistry with the band remains undeniable. But with that, Mike Mangini, who had been an integral part of the band since 2010, stepped away, making for an emotional transition.

In this interview, LaBrie gives insight into how the band navigated that change, what it's been like having Portnoy's energy back in the studio, and how it's influencing the band's creative process moving forward.

    The Future of Dream Theater

With Parasomnia now out in the world, what's next for Dream Theater? A massive tour is on the horizon, but beyond that, LaBrie teases what's in store for the band's evolving sound and future projects. Could this be the beginning of a new golden era for the progressive metal legends?
