In this teaching series in Romans, Eddie walks us through the book of Romans to reveal it in its Hebraic context teaching it with a Torah perspective. Many times Christians quote the following verse as the reason that we don't need to follow Torah:

"For sin shall not have dominion over you: for you are not under the law, but under grace." Romans 6:14

This verse gets quoted out of context. It gets framed as a contrast between following Yeshua and the grace He provides and following the Torah. We are saved by grace through faith and AFTER we are saved by grace through faith, then we follow the Torah because we LOVE Messiah Yeshua.

In Romans 6, Paul makes an analogy of our life in Messiah to the death, burial and resurrection of Yeshua.

In this session, we review the “Age of Law/Age of Grace” mindset/doctrine and untangle this conundrum. The way that Yahweh redeemed his people out of Egypt was that he remembered his covenant with Abraham.

And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them. Exodus 2:24-25

The redemption of his people was based on Yahweh’s faithfulness to His covenant promise. For those who would believe His promises He would bestow grace/mercy upon them.

On behalf of His covenant promise He made to Abraham, the children of Israel were saved by grace through faith out of Egypt and THEN they came to Mt Sinai. It was there that they were given commandments regarding how they were to live their lives. By keeping His commandments they would be showing obedience to Yahweh and showing their love for the one who saved them.

This is what the Torah teaches. Saved by grace through faith is NOT a New Testament teaching but is based in Torah. There is not a certain period of time that is called the “Age of Grace”. Yahweh’s grace and mercy is from everlasting to everlasting. There is not a certain period of time that is called the “Age of Law”, because His Law, His word, His Torah abides forever.

Torah = teachings/instructions of the God of Israel

Torah = the Word of God from Genesis to Revelation

Now go and attack Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and do not spare them. But kill both man and woman, infant and nursing child, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’ ” 1 Samuel 15:3

In the last session, we looked at an example of what it means to minister in the flesh(by the letter). We looked at 1 Samuel 15. Saul was instructed to utterly destroy them and all that they have. Samuel disobeys the Lord and he allows the king to live and he also keeps the best of the sheep and oxen and lambs:

But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings, the lambs, and all that was good, and were unwilling to utterly destroy them. But everything despised and worthless, that they utterly destroyed. 1 Samuel 15:9

When Samuel confronts him on this, Saul uses logic and reason to explain what he did and why he did it. This is the carnal mind operating, or ministering by the “letter”:

Why then did you not obey the voice of the LORD? Why did you swoop down on the spoil, and do evil in the sight of the LORD?” and Saul said to Samuel, “But I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and gone on the mission on which the LORD sent me, and brought back Agag king of Amalek; I have utterly destroyed the Amalekites. But the people took of the plunder, sheep and oxen, the best of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal.” 1 Samuel 15:19-21

In this session we look at another example of what it is to minister in the “letter”, in forms, rituals and religion. We will look at Isaiah 58:

Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? Isaiah 58:6

If we go and do the “form” of religion but our heart is not right before the Lord, if our heart is in disobedience or rebellion then we are ministering in the flesh, by the “letter” and not in the spirit.

The way that we are to follow the Torah of Yeshua is by His Spirit:

A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. Ezekiel 36:26-27

We are not to follow the Torah in our own ability, in our own strength, or in our own understanding, but we are to follow the Torah of Yeshua by HIS SPIRIT. To do that, we must have a heart of stone removed and have the Father give us a heart of flesh.

Ye are our epistle written in our hearts, known and read of all men: Forasmuch as ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart. 2 Cor. 3: 2-3

In this session, Eddie gives us a background and context for understanding 2 Corinthians 3 from a Hebraic perspective. The background is taking a look at a mindset that is very prevalent and pervasive in the mainstream Sunday Christian world: that is, The Age of Law/Age of Grace doctrine.

What is this mindset? That before Yeshua died on the tree, we were under the “law” or the Torah, but that after Yeshua died on the tree, the Law/the Torah was done away with, was nailed to the tree, and now we are under the “Age of Grace”.

Is this really true? Listen in as Eddie dives into this topic and shows in the scriptures that Yahweh’s grace and mercy has always existed: it is eternal. The grace and the mercy of the God of Israel is from everlasting to everlasting. The torah establishes a pattern that we are saved by faith through grace, and after we are saved that we demonstrate our love for Yeshua by keeping His commandments. So, how do we follow the torah? It is by His spirit, because the torah is written upon our heart:

Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jeremiah 31:31-33
