At cockcrow, the ashes were removed from the sacrifice altar. Cockcrow is dawn. Any one of the Levites who wanted to remove the ashes would rise before dawn to bathe. The superintendant would come knock and he would say, “Let all who have bathed come and draw lots”. (Tamid 26a). The priest who drew lots to remove the ashes would first wash his hands and feet. Initially, the ashes are put beside the altar. Later the ashes are put outside of the camp.

There were three camps in the wilderness Tabernacle. Similarly, there are three camps in Jerusalem.

The ashes were put outside of the camp in a clean place:

“Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the burnt offering: The burnt offering shall be on the hearth upon the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. ‘Then he shall take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. Leviticus 6:9,11

The Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem is “outside of the camp”. The daily tamid ashes were brought to the Mount of Olives, outside of the camp. A causeway was built from the Temple Mount to the Mount of Olives.

Yeshua was crucified outside the camp...on the Mount of Olives.

In this teaching segment, we will get an overview of the daily activities in the Temple and in particular, we will look at those activities as it relates to the daily tamid lamb offering. As we go over each element in the Temple, we will make the connection of how that activity is associated to Yeshua and the events surrounding his death upon the tree. What were some of the daily activities in the Temple?

In this segment we look at:

*The night watches in the Temple.

*The removal of the ashes from the sacrifice altar.

At night, guards were placed in 24 stations around the gates and courts. Each guard consisted of 10 men, so that in all, there were 240 Levites and 10 priests on duty every night. According to the Jewish calculation of time, there were three watches in the night.

The head of the Temple was the captain of the Temple. The captain of the Temple was leader over the Levitical Temple guard. A Temple night watcher who fell asleep had his clothes burned. What is the application for us?

Yeshua is the captain of our Temple. The verse below reflects this Temple language:

“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” Revelation 16:15

In this teaching segment we will look at the commandment from the God of Israel that every Israelite of the age of 20 and older was to bring once a year, a half shekel. The half shekels was collected for the service of the Temple. The half shekel was also given for the atonement of the soul:

The rich shall not give more, and the poor shall not give less than half a shekel, when they give an offering unto the LORD, to make an atonement for your souls. Exodus 30:15

The daily tamid lamb offering was a communal sacrifice. The sacrifice was done on behalf of the nation of Israel. It was financed out of the half shekel offerings that were collected from the people once/year. The daily tamid lamb offering is linked to the entire nation of Israel.

When Yeshua died on the tree, the way in which he died on the tree, is associated with the daily tamid lamb offering. When Yeshua died on the tree and the shed his blood, He was doing so on behalf of the entire nation of Israel. He also died for all the nations on the earth (John 3:16).

The Thank offering (or Todah) is associated with the Shelem (Peace) offering.

And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer unto the LORD.If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried. Leviticus 7:11-12

One of the applications or meaning of this offering for alliance or friendship. It is an offering that is associated with having table fellowship with someone. If we want to have a personal relationship with the God of Israel we must bring to him a “Todah” or a thank offering. We can see how the Todah (thank) offering is associated with the Shelem (peace) offering in 2 Chronicles 33:16:

And he repaired the altar of the LORD, and sacrificed thereon peace offerings and thank offerings, and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel.

What is the altar? It is our heart. Why would we need to repair our altar, our heart? Because it has been wounded. What is involved in repairing/restoring my wounded heart?

We are to offer shelem (peace) offerings and todah (thank) offerings unto God from the altar of our heart. This will bring medicine for the wounded heart. How do we do this?

The scripture says we are to do this with unleavened cakes:

If we want to have table fellowship and personal relationship with the God of Israel, we must come before Him with an attitude of thankfulness for what He has done for us and with a song of praise unto Him. In doing so, He wants us to make a total commitment of our lives unto Him while seeking to live a holy life before Him.

The Thank offering (Todah ) is the medicine for healing our wounded heart. What causes a wounded heart? Often it comes from offenses that happen in our lives. It can come from other people or it can come from some form of disappointment that comes into our lives that causes us to withdraw from the God of Israel.

The Thank offering is a proclamation that we made to the God of Israel, thanking Him for His goodness, His kindness, His mercy, His compassion, which He shows and expresses.

A Thank offering is also declaring that when disappointment happens in our lives, that the God of Israel is sovereign and He rules over our circumstances. Even when things happen in our lives that we do not understand, we continue to confess that the God of Israel is sovereign, He is the Most High, and His mercy endures forever.

Paul associates the veil that is upon the face of Moses to a veil that is over the heart. Paul is explaining the heart attitude and the mind and our actions and how we live our lives unto Yeshua and how we minister to others in this midrash, comparing it to a stony heart versus the spirit of the Torah.

And afterward all the children of Israel came nigh: and he gave them in commandment all that the LORD had spoken with him in mount Sinai. And till Moses had done speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. Exodus 34:32-33

A veil over the heart is a stony heart and a carnal mind.

But their minds were blinded …2 Corinthians 3:14

The deaf and blind do not follow the Torah. A veiled heart does not believe. The ministry of death has a veil upon the heart. The ministry of life removes the veil from the heart.

But their minds were blinded for until this day remains the same veil untaken away in the reading of the old testament which vail is done away in Messiah. Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be taken away. 2 Corinthians 3:14, 16

Following the Torah by the Holy Spirit sets the captive free! Following the Torah by the Holy Spirit results in works done in great love. The ministry of life shows mercy and love to others.

In this teaching segment we take a look at what Paul said: The letter of the law kills but the spirit of the law brings life. What did Paul mean by this? Was he speaking against the Torah when he said that the “letter of the law” kills? Was he saying to follow the spirit INSTEAD of following the Torah? Or, was he teaching us the proper way to follow the Torah in expressing our faith in Yeshua as Messiah.

Is Paul saying that following the Torah kills but following the Holy Spirit brings life?

If we look at 2 Corinthians 3 more closely, we see that Paul is teaching on how to minister following Yeshua to others. In doing so, he is giving us a Torah midrash on the proper way we are to live our lives in ministering Yeshua to others.

So how would we live our lives and minister to others according to the letter of the law? And how would we live our lives and minister to others according to the spirit of the law? This is what Paul is addressing. Listen in to find out more!

But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away. 2 Corinthians 3:7

What is done away with? Stony hearts. Ministering to others with a stony heart.

But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 1 Corinthians 15:35

Paul is answering the question, what kind of bodies will we have when we are resurrected? He answers the question with these verses:

There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another. There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differs from another star in glory. So also is the resurrection of the dead. 1 Corinthians 15:40-42

Paul is saying that all believers in Yeshua as Messiah will receive resurrected bodies, but not all believers in Messiah will have the same level of glory in that resurrected body.

The ministry of death on a stony heart passes away. Serving Yeshua with a pure heart has eternal glory.
