  • 46. Genesis 1:1-2 Deep Dive: Is there "chaos" in Genesis 1?

Genesis 1 has inspired deep study of Scripture and sparked intense debates amongst people of faith. Here are some thoughts from the Hebrew language and the ancient Near East Context to contribute to this age long discussion.

We address a number of topics

    • Gap Theory
    • How do we translate Genesis 1:1-2?
    • What is the Hebrew behind “formless and void” (תהו ובהו)? What is this referring to?
    • We look at where the original Hebrew words are used in the rest of the Hebrew Bible
    • An early scholarly theory is that a loaded idea of “chaos” is behind these words
    • How does the ancient Near Eastern context impact our understanding of Genesis 1? We discuss Ugaritic and Akkadian literature
    • Is the Hebrew word for “deep” a direct allusion to Tiamat from Enuma Eliš?
    • What does Genesis 1:1 -2 (in light of the different theories), teach us about God?

A book we mention in this episode:

  • 45. One Hebrew Word that Means Work, Serve, AND Worship: Explanation and Implications
I share the first mind-blowing Hebrew language insight that I ever learned. This episode is about two big questions. What is worship? What is work? What if I told you that Hebrew has a word that means BOTH?This Hebrew word launches us into a foundational conversation about core components of life. Our journey takes us to Exodus where this word is the golden thread throughout the entire book…but you probably wouldn’t guess since the word is translated differently throughout the book in most translations. The ideas of this podcast have huge implications for how we live our practical lives. This episode will also be of interest to people who wrestle with wondering if their life is pleasing to God and people who want a different perspective on spiritual disciplines than you will probably hear in church.Recommended Resources in the Episode:Purpose Mastermind: https://markdelaney.com/purpose-mastermind/All Solutions Consulting: https://www.allsolutions.consultingWHERE TO FIND USPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/hebrewbibleinsightsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLRSNQ7xVw7PjQ5FnqYmSDAInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/_hebrewbibleinsights/TikTok: www.tiktok.com/@hebrewbibleinsightsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/HebrewBibleInsightsWebsite: https://www.hebrewbibleinsights.com--- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/matthew9793/support

  • 41. Retribution: How did Israel view God's involvement in the world?

How do the Hebrew authors portray that way that God gets involved in the lives of individuals and communities? How does this look in the New Testament, and how can we grapple with this question today? The hermeneutical principle of retribution is one of the most important worldview concepts of Israel and its neighbors. Reward and punishment (blessing and cursing) based on merit is one of the foundational components of how they viewed the world. In this episode, we discuss this topic at length.

We talk about modern conceptions of retribution before diving into how the people of the ancient Near East interpreted events. We dive into a specific example from the Mesha Stele Inscription from Moab along with the corresponding story in the Book of Kings. We talk about New Testament stories and the challenge for the church today. We finish by going over a key passage in Jeremiah and conclude with the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil as well as Proverbs.

  • 39. Dr. Joanna Kline: Connections between the stories of David, Jacob, Judah, and Joseph

Dr. Joanna Kline is a professor at Gordon College where she teaches Old Testament. She specializes in literary approaches to the Bible and early interpretation of Scripture. If you enjoy seeing connections between different biblical stories, you will love today’s episode.

Joanna talks about narrative analogy: when Biblical stories are written in such a way to make comparisons to other stories that can lead to more avenues of interpretation. She sees connections between the story of David and the stories of Jacob, Judah, and Joseph.

We also talk about the nature of the writing/editing process of the Hebrew Bible and how we explain why narrative analogies occur. There are some interesting differences in the Greek Septuagint and Hebrew Masoretic Text in the story of David and Goliath.

David, Uriah, and Bathsheba - Joseph, Potiphar, and Potiphar’s wife

Judah and Tamar - Absolem and half sister

We finish by discussing the themes that rise to the surface through the motifs of these narrative analogies.
