Moving through the Apostle Shaul’s (Paul) letters to Timothy, his disciple, once again we see the need for anointed and appointed teachers as Timothy is instructed to enlist “trustworthy men who are competent to teach.” Shaul uses metaphors such as being a good soldier and a farmer; do you know what these mean? Moving forward through the epistles (letters) of the apostle Paul we arrive at the letter to the Colossians where Rabbi Steve Berkson points out the various recurring themes throughout all of Paul’s writings, comparing things which are above with things that are earthly, righteousness with unrighteousness, that which is of life with that which is of death.

Continuing on the journey through “The Heart of the Matter” Rabbi Steve Berkson begins this lesson in Philippians, chapter 4, verse 6, where the apostle Paul says, “Do not worry at all, but in every matter, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to Elohim.” We learn from this lesson that as we do what Paul said to do we are exercising our belief/trust, emunah, in The Father. Then we will experience the peace, shalom, that is beyond our human understanding, because it’s the peace that can only come from Him. He says that again in verse 9, which again is ‘discipleship language’, as He says to practice these things and the Elohim of peace shall be with you.

This teaching is totally full of sage wisdom about personal relationships and how to deal with yourself and others according to Torah.

Now that Rabbi Steve Berkson has thoroughly taught us what the Apostle Paul was writing to the Ephesians in chapter two, he now leads us into understanding chapter three – the mystery or secret of what Messiah Yeshua accomplished through His death, burial and resurrection, that the nations (Gentiles) now have a place among those who are the chosen ones according to the flesh, Israel.

Then Rabbi Steve moves us into chapter four where a problem with authority is addressed. Submitting to the right leadership, anointed and appointed, is the only way we, as the body of Messiah, are going to learn to love each other and come together in unity and be one. Existing today are the five ministries as listed in Ephesians 4:11, emissaries (apostles), prophets, evangelists, shepherds and teachers. These exist today. We must pray to the Father that our eyes are opened to recognize who these people are in order to properly learn for the sake of the Kingdom of Elohim. (Ephesians 4:11-16)

Starting in the letter to the Ephesians, Rabbi Steve Berkson points us to the fact that the Apostle Paul was trying to help the believers in Ephesus understand that even with what Messiah Yeshua accomplished in His death, burial and resurrection, there is still an “expectation” to abide by the covenant with the Creator that was laid out in Exodus chapter 19, (paraphrasing) “If you diligently follow my words, I will take you as my people and bless you more than you can know.”

Rabbi Steve helps us to understand that we don’t have to “understand” every thing that we are required to do, but that in the doing we will begin to understand. We should have an attitude like Abraham in that whatever YHVH told him to do, even to the sacrificing of his son, he said, “Here Am I!” In Hebrew, hineni. This is what Rabbi Steve calls, “a ‘Trusting’ Obedience.”

In this teaching Rabbi Steve explains thoroughly the famous passage found in chapter 2 and verses 8-10. Throughout this teaching the word grace is defined and explained as to whether it is “unmerited favor” or “merited favor”. Are we really saved (delivered) by unmerited favor? What are the “good works” that were prepared beforehand? What is “the Torah of the commands in dogma”? Rabbi Steve brings clarity to these seemingly unclear and difficult sayings of Paul.
