This was a well-done and quite different detective mystery with Powell working his singing and whistling talents into an otherwise "hard boiled" and often action-packed story. In 1950 this extremely well written and superbly acted Adventure-Mystery was part of what NBC radio called its "Mystery Block Programming." The stories were based on actual events during World War II that dealt with the Office of Strategic Services or OSS. Our country's first attempt at dropping undercover operators behind enemy lines, organizing partisans to fight the Axis powers in the best spy system of Europe and Asia during WW II. The character, known only to the listening audience as the Whistler, was the host and narrator of the tales which focused on crime and fate. He frequently commented upon the action as was done in a Greek chorus in Ancient Greek tragedy, comedy, satyr plays... when a group of performers commented in a collective voice on the dramatic action. The show was also known for the haunting signature theme tune composed by Wilbur Hatch and featured Dorothy Roberts whistling with an orchestra. 692 episodes were produced and 200 of them no longer exist. These are all excellent shows in content, technical production, and acting. Gale Gordon, Joseph Kearns, Marvin MIller, Bill Johnstone, Hans Conried, Cathy Lewis, Elliott Lewis, Gerald Mohr, Lurene Tuttle, Jack Webb... made up the supporting cast. Created by writer-director-producer Cy Howard, My Friend Irma became a media franchaise... television, film, and radio. It was a top-rated, long-running radio situation comedy... escalated to television, motion pictures, a comic strip and a comic book. Radio series broadcast on CBS from April 11, 1947 to August 23, 1954. The episode heard on this track was only the 4th in the series. Spoiler alert.... Secret word is "Milk"... Yes, Groucho Marx is back with another episode of the classic American comedy quiz series "You Bet Your Life". The announcer/assistant was George Fenneman. The show began on ABC radio on October 27, 1947, moved to CBS in 1949 and then to NBC in 1950. The show was simultaneously broadcast on radio and television with the last episode airing on radio June 10, 1960. The television version continued another year, but with a new name "The Groucho Show" Gameplay on this show was secondary to Groucho's comedic interplay with the contestants and Fenneman. The program was rerun in the 1970s and later in syndication as "The Best of Groucho"... it was the first game show to have repeat episodes in the syndication market... quite a tribute to someone that critics considered the wittiest comedian ever! This 15 min broadcast was sponsored by the Army Recruiting Office and was broadcast via the Armed Forces Radio Service in 1953. Jimmy Dean, who was in the Army at the time... along with his Texas Wildcats band is the host of the show. Special guest is the Grand Ole Opry star Lazy Jim Day who was a comedian and a banjo player. The routine he does in this show broke Jimmy Dean up more than once! Boston Blackie was a fictional character created by Jack Boyle in a short story written in 1914! The story attracted a lot of attention and a silent movie was made built around this crime-solving detective. Then there were 14 "talkies" produced... then a radio show. Finally in 1944 "Boston Blackie" made it as a summer replacement show for Amos and Andy... and then it got its own show that ran from April 1945 to October of 1950... starring Richard Kollmar as Blackie. The summer replacement in 1944 starred Chester Morris. Good stories... lots of organ music (it was cheaper than an orchestra and less work and cost then a lot of sound effects guys) ...
