Spike Jones was a unique bandleader with a very unique band... he was a combination sound effects guy and musician. He was also sort of a "Musical Butcher" in that he and his City Slicker band would take on any song, be it classical or pop and chop it up into bits and pieces intermingled with gunshots, whistles, bells, gongs... and truly outlandish vocals. Host Kenny Delmar welcomes the Armed Forces Radio Service audience on May 5, 1945, just 3 days before VE Day on May 8th...when Germany surrendered during WW II. Singing on the show was Joan Edwards and the group known as "The Hit Paraders." The top 10 songs of the week were featured. The ratings were gathered by sales of records, sheet music purchased, requests for tunes from bands, etc. Songs heard in order of appearance are: All of My Life; Just a Prayer Away; A Little On The Lonely Side; He's Home For A Little While; Laura; Dream; excellent organ piece, My Dreams Are Getting Better All The Time; I'm Beginning To See The Light; Candy. You will note that the first few songs made sense considering so many troops were overseas during WW II. This was originally broadcast on the Armed Forces Radio Service via shortwave and was not heard on commercial stations in the United States.
