Thanksgiving Dinner at George and Gracie's house... great idea! Or was it. Gracie's grandfather is an overnight guest and on doctor's orders he is sliding down the banister... and that is only the beginning of the story!

Gildersleeve invites a few servicemen to his house for Thanksgiving, but... Things begin to become more disrupting than he thought it would be. Harold Perry is Gildersleeve... Willard Waterman took over the role when Perry wanted a bigger salary from NBC. They fired him and replaced him with a man who looked very much like him and sounded like him as well. In fact the switch was so perfect, it took some time before the listening audience even realized it had happened!

Jack invites the cast over for Thanksgiving dinner... and he tells them is will be extra special because he is cooking the turkey!

Then we get to go for a rather tough ride in Jack's Maxwell. Sound Effects by Mel Blanc!

Brief audio intro on the history of Lux Radio Theatre and introduction to the "Perfect Specimen" starring Joan Blondell and Errol Flynn... re-creating the roles they played in the 1937 film. Lux Radio Theatre was on the air for 22 years and featured many film stars of the era. Actors loved to do the show as they were well-payed, promoted their films and careers, and did not have to memorize a script or wear costumes and makeup... although I expect with live audiences they wore a "little" makeup! The Philco Radio Hall of Fame was a radio variety show that featured the most popular radio programs of the time... 1943-46. The show was hosted by Paul Whiteman (bandleader and composer) as he conducted the Philco Orchestra. The series was broadcast on NBC Sunday nights. This track will be living in the Musical Variety Show Playlist.

Count Basie and his orchestra are the featured guests on this NBC show entitled "Stars in Jazz" that was broadcast live from Birdland in NYC. This show is from January 6, 1953. In the photo you see the saxophone section of the band... and they play some amazing music in this program... "talented" isn't good enough for this orchestra... "My Favorite Husband" starring Lucille Ball and Richard Denning... was the radio pre-cursor to "I Love Lucy." On television, Lucille Ball insisted that her real-life husband, Desi Arnaz play the role of her show husband and Richard Denning was out. Jello, the sponsor of the radio show was not happy and dropped the TV show. Phillip Morris Cigarettes picked up the sponsorship and the rest is comedy history.
