"Stars of Jazz" was an attempt to give listeners an education in the American art form of Jazz music. The radio and television show was hosted by Bobby Troup. He was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania with his first musical hit being "Daddy" which became a number 1 hit for the Sammy Kaye Orchestra in 1941. Troup was a captain in the Marine Corp during WWII. He was the first white officer to command an all African American unit in North Carolina and was very much respected by his troops... Stars of Jazz featured Jazz greats who were working in the Hollywood area in the 1950's. On this recording his guest is Buddy Collette... an American jazz flutist, saxophonist, and clarinetist. He was the founding member of the Chico Hamilton Quintet. He also worked with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Nat King Cole and Nelson Riddle. He was good friends with Groucho Marx who hired him as the only African American in the band for Marx's radio and TV show "You Bet Your Life"... "It Pays To Be Ignorant"... was a radio comedy show that was popular for 9 years on 3 networks. The series was really a spoof on the authoritative academic discussions that were evident on such authoritative panel series as "Quz Kids" and "Information Please". Program was broadcast on all three networks (Mutual, CBS, and NBC) at different times between 1942 and 1951, often running as a summer replacement show. Cast included Harry McNaughton, Lulu McConnell and George Shelton with the MC being Tom Howard. Lots of fun to listen to even today. The Question for this show is "What is a Bargain Sale?"... show has a couple of musical numbers that were generally very appropriate and well done! Enjoy.
